Health care and dependent care claims during the 2022 calendar year are eligible if the date of service was in 2022. Any money remaining in the account after this date is forfeited per IRS regulations.

Dependent care claims require an invoice or receipt from the provider. All medical, dental and optical claims should be processed through your insurance plans before submitting them to your health care reimbursement account.

Attach the Explanation of Benefits (EOB) or a claim summary from your insurance plan to the claim form when submitting a claim. For expenses not processed through insurance, submit the itemized receipt.

More information and the FSA claim form can be found online on the Human Resources Flex Spending page.

For questions, contact Benefit Services at benefits@mtu.edu or call 7-2517.

ADVANCE Weekly Roundup: In Support of Trans Colleagues – We Need More Research

The recent terrifying shooting in a Colorado nightclub underscores the vulnerability of transgender and LGBTQIA-diverse peoples and the urgent need for better measures to ensure inclusion and safety.

According to the Equity and Inclusion Vocabulary resource from the Michigan Tech Center for Diversity and Inclusion, “Identifying as transgender, or trans, means that one’s internal sense of gender is different from [...] the sex that person was assigned at birth.” Trans includes genders “other than woman or man, such as nonbinary, genderqueer, genderfluid, no gender or multiple genders, or some other gender identity.” Life on campus for those who live these definitions is fraught, now more than ever.

A focused review of research in education, transgender and queer studies, and psychology examined three themes related to the microclimates for trans individuals on campus: (a) disclosing trans identities, (b) trans communities, and (c) resources and career-level support (Seigel, 2019). Conclusions suggest the experiences of trans faculty impact their well-being, safety, access to resources and career trajectories. The article advocates context-specific interventions on campus.

These findings are consistent with the poignant autobiographical account of a trans STEM academic, “Local Minima and Maxima in Trans-STEM Affirmations,” a chapter in the 2022 book "Queering STEM Culture in US Higher Education: Navigating Experiences of Exclusion in the Academy." K. Trenshaw succinctly and lucidly describes marginalization, disparagement and closeting, but also support and encouragement from mentors and often unexpected allies. The book is available in the Van Pelt and Opie Library collection.

At Michigan Tech, the Office of the Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion has initiated activities to create more hospitable and career-supportive environments for diverse faculty, such as encouraging all campus units to create a DEIS Strategic Plan. In addition, the Center for Diversity and Inclusion offers resources and training that are useful to those committed to allyship and who identify as trans.

Today’s feature was shared with us by the ADVANCE PI Team. If you have an article you think we should feature, please email it to advance-mtu@mtu.edu and we will consider adding it to the ADVANCE Weekly Roundup.

The ADVANCE Weekly Roundup is brought to you by ADVANCE at Michigan Tech, an NSF-funded initiative dedicated to improving faculty career success, retention, diversity, equity and inclusion. Past articles are available on the ADVANCE Newsblog.

SS Brown Bag: 'Planning the sunset of coal in South Africa: What is justice?'

The Department of Social Sciences (SS) is hosting a brown bag presentation today (Dec. 2) from noon to 1 p.m. in person in AOB 201 and virtually via Zoom.

In July 2022, South Africa announced the impending completion of a new coal-burning power plant. Even as South Africa acknowledges the vulnerability of its population to climate change effects, South Africa also faces internal pressure to maintain its status as a regional leader in energy access among the countries of Sub-Saharan Africa. For decades, coal met that need. The construction of the coal workforce occurred under Apartheid… to what degree could the workforce of renewable energy repeat the same mistakes? What is a just energy transition for South Africa’s coal workforce and coal communities?

Join Jennifer Rachels, Ph.D. candidate and U.S. Department of Energy ORISE Fellow, for a discussion of her research on this question.

MS Defense: Poorva Kadrolli, GMES

M.S. in Mining Engineering candidate Poorva Kadrolli will present their master's defense at 8:30 a.m. today (Dec. 2) in Dow 633. Virtual attendance is also invited via Zoom

All are welcome to attend.

Kadrolli's defense is titled "Injury Severity Modeling in the Mining Industry Using Workers' Compensation Data and Data Analytics."

Kadrolli is advised by Snehamoy Chatterjee.

From the abstract:
... The type of risk associated with an injury in the mining industry can be identified by analyzing workers’ compensation (WC) data. ... The relationship between the risk factors and claim type from the WC data was evaluated through Chi-squared and post-hoc tests. ... Results from the statistical analysis show that age group, injury cause, nature of the injury, and part of body injured are statistically significant risk factors, whereas gender and mine type aren’t significant with injury severity. Once the statistically significant risk factors and impact measures were analyzed, the machine learning (ML) models were applied. The categorical variables were treated using one-hot encoding before applying ML models. The data was divided into the training and testing set. Class balancing and data augmentation techniques like the synthetic minority oversampling technique (SMOTE) and adaptive synthetic sampling (ADASYN) were used to deal with the class imbalance problems. Tree-based algorithms like decision tree, random forest, and gradient boosting with a few other algorithms like logistic regression and support vector machine were tested to understand the ML performance. The gradient boosting algorithm with ADASYN (data augmentation technique) proved to be the best machine learning model to predict injury severity. The results of statistical analysis and machine learning algorithms can help the mine personnel comprehend risk factors by taking preventative actions at the mine site.

See 'A Christmas Carol' This Weekend at the Rozsa

After a heartwarming opening night, you have three more chances to see "A Christmas Carol," written by Charles Dickens, adapted to the stage by Romulus Linney and presented by Michigan Tech Theatre this weekend.

The beloved holiday classic, directed by Trish Helsel, boasts a Tech Theatre Company cast of nearly 40 local youth, Keweenaw community members, and Michigan Tech faculty, staff and students. "A Christmas Carol" will lift holiday spirits at the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts at 7:30 p.m. tonight (Dec. 2) and tomorrow (Dec. 3), with a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday (Dec. 4).

From the first “Bah, Humbug!” to the final, “God bless us, everyone,” this performance will delight audiences of all ages as they join Ebenezer Scrooge on his journey of transformation and redemption.

“The Charles Dickens classic has long been a Christmas favorite; the story is much more universal in its message,” says Helsel, professor of theatre at Michigan Tech. “I chose this stage adaptation because it does not paint Ebenezer Scrooge as a villain, but rather someone broken by a series of devastating life events. Our production focuses on Scrooge’s ability to accept his past and embrace the present.”

The strength of the Keweenaw community, its overwhelming artistic talent and phenomenal young people were at the forefront of Helsel’s mind as she chose this year’s holiday show. “The show was chosen as a community-centered production with a cast of Michigan Tech students, faculty and community members,” says Helsel. “It has been a pleasure to work with this lot of youngsters, who range in age from 4 to 17 years. It is exciting to be a part of their induction into a professional theatre setting. Children are such fast learners! They have picked up the British dialects with ease, and they memorize quickly. Most importantly, they bring a sense of joy to the process.”

Get Tickets
Get tickets online, by calling 906-487-1906, at the Rozsa Box Office from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday, or for one hour before shows. Michigan Tech students can reserve free Experience Tech tickets online, and Student Rush will be available at the door.
