"This scholarship has motivated me to continue volunteering beyond high school and
to get more involved on campus and in the community."Iliana, 2024 Cohort
Being a Thompson Scholar at Michigan Tech means more than receiving a scholarship—it
means becoming part of a connected, supportive community. From welcome events and
social gatherings to volunteer opportunities and mentorship, Scholars build lasting
friendships and a strong network that extends beyond the classroom. Throughout the
year, you’ll engage in experiences that foster collaboration, personal growth, and
a sense of belonging, all while honoring the generosity of the Thompson Foundation.
Each new Thompson Scholar is offered the chance to join our guide program! They would
be paired up with a current Thompson Scholar with a similar major and interests. Guides
will reach out and engage with the new Scholars, inviting them to events and checking
in regarding college life.
Each August, new Thompson Scholars are invited to a special welcome celebration! It’s
a chance to meet fellow scholars and connect with returning students who help set
the tone for a supportive and collaborative environment.
Social Events and Foundation Visits
Throughout the year, we host a variety of events designed to build relationships and
deepen your connection with the program. Group volunteer opportunities, socials, meals,
and informal coffee-chats are just a few ways scholars come together.
When our partners from the Thompson Foundation visit campus, students also get the
unique chance to meet the people who make this experience possible. The Foundation
loves hearing about what our students are doing!
