Your Michigan Tech journey doesn’t look the same from year to year! As you build independence, now is the time explore our vibrant on-campus residential communities and start planning where you and your friends may want to call home for the 2027-28 academic year
Maybe you’re ready for a little more independence. Maybe you want a different living environment or a new roommate experience. Or maybe you’ve found a community that feels like home and you want to stay right where you are. Whatever you’re looking for, Michigan Tech offers a variety of housing options to help you find the experience that’s right for your next step.
The Housing Countdown is underway. Here’s what you can do now to prepare for contract renewal.
If you’re a prospective student, please visit our New and Transfer Student Housing Contract Process webpage.
Housing Countdown Steps

Step 1: Stop and Think Before You Sign Any Contract
Plan out your options before you act! This is a big decision, so before you make any housing commitment for next year, talk with your family and friends to think about the experience you want. Some scholarships require two years of on-campus residency and you may have other financial considerations, so check your financial aid, scholarship, and housing requirements.
A housing contract is a serious financial commitment. Signing an off-campus housing contract does not release you from scholarship requirements or an existing Michigan Tech Housing contract. Take time to understand your situation and explore your options before signing any agreement.

Step 2: Explore Your Options
Now is the time to explore our residence halls and communities. Don’t wait until January to start thinking about where you want to live. Visit residence halls, learn about your housing options, talk with current residents, and consider what type of community and living experience is right for you.
Want to be at the center of Husky Life?
Our traditional residence halls offer a large community experience where you can live
alongside many fellow Huskies and stay connected to campus life.
Looking for more control over your living experience?
East Hall offers suite-style living with modern amenities and the opportunity for
a group of four friends to shape their own community.
Ready for more independence while staying connected to campus?
Hillside Place offers apartment-style living with full kitchens, single bedrooms,
and shared living rooms, giving you the experience of apartment living while remaining
part of the Michigan Tech community.
There’s a place for you!. Explore your options and find the community that fits where you are now and where you want to go next. When it's time for contract renewal this spring, you'll be ready to choose your next Husky home.

Step 3: Start Planning With Your Roommates
Now is the time to start talking with your friends and plan out your arrangements for your Husky home next year. Have these conversations now so you have a successful roommate arrangement next year! .
Almost all housing options require a roommate group that fills the room or suite’s capacity. Talk with your friends about where you want to live and make sure you understand the roommate requirements for the community you’re considering.

Step 4: Stay Informed
The Housing Countdown doesn’t stop here.
Watch your Michigan Tech email for updates about the 2027-28 contract renewal timeline, important dates, and instructions, which will be coming in late fall for the renewal process that begins in early spring.
Make sure you’re using current information from Residential Living when making your housing plans. Housing policies, availability, pricing, and programs can change from year to year. Having accurate information will help you move forward with confidence.

Step 5: Renew Your Housing Contract
When contract renewal opens in January, you’ll be ready to make your next move.
You’ll have already:
- Checked your financial aid and scholarship requirements.
- Explored your housing options.
- Talked with potential roommates.
- Considered what you want from your living experience next year.
- Learned what to expect from the renewal process.
When the time comes, follow the renewal instructions and complete your housing contract to secure your next Husky home.
Remember: signing a contract will commit you to campus housing for the academic year, so make sure you are ready for the commitment when renewal becomes available.
Your Countdown Continues
You don’t have to figure out your next steps all at once. Start by exploring your options, talking with the people who matter to you, and thinking about what you want from your housing experience next year.
We’re here to help. If you have questions about housing options or the renewal process, contact the Housing team at housing@mtu.edu or call 906-487-2682. We’re happy to help you explore your options and understand the process.
