Lecture Monday on Michigan Civil Rights Initiative

Susan Kaufmann, associate director of the Center for the Education of Women at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, will give a talk, “The Potential Impact of the Michigan Civil Rights Initiative,” on Monday, Sept. 25, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in Room 135 of Fisher Hall on the Michigan Tech campus.

She will also be the guest of Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) at a brown-bag lunch and informal discussion on Monday from 11:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Alumni Lounge, located on the first floor of the university’s Memorial Union. Both events are free and open to the public.

Kaufmann will discuss the implications of the Michigan Civil Rights Initiative, should it be approved by voters in November.

She bases her conclusions on a study conducted following the 1996 passage of a nearly identical initiative, California’s Proposition 209. Prop. 209 has resulted in the elimination of services such as college preparation programs for students of color, summer science programs for girls and funding for training minority doctors and nurses. It has ended the requirement that state boards reflect the population of the state and resulted in the end of numerous voluntary K-12 school integration efforts.

Kaufmann’s visit is sponsored by Michigan Tech’s Visiting Women and Minority Lecturer/Scholar Series, the Office of the President and WISE. For more information, call 487-3539.
