APSRC History & Milestones – The 1st 20 Years

 

  • 2006 — Founding of APSRC
    Advanced Power Systems Research Center is established at Michigan Technological University by Dr. Jeff Naber
  • 2008 — First Dedicated Research Facility
    APSRC acquires and renovates a 4,000 ft² facility in Hancock, Michigan, creating its first centralized research environment.
  • 2010 — Expansion Near Houghton County Airport
    APSRC acquires 35,000 ft² of a former manufacturing facility and transforms it into a major research hub supporting advanced testing and development.
  • 2012 — Mobile Laboratory Launch
    With the inaugural deployment on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, APSRC introduces its Mobile Lab, a unique platform for research, workforce training, and technology outreach
  • 2014 — APS LABS Brand Introduced
    The public-facing APS LABS identity is adopted to reflect expanding facilities, partnerships, and technical capabilities.
  • 2017 — Entry into Connected & Autonomous Systems
    APS LABS advances into Connected and Autonomous Vehicle research through a U.S. Department of Energy NEXTCAR award.
  • 2020 — Power Generation Research Expansion
    Development begins on a new 2-acre site as APS LABS becomes a designated Solar Regional Test Center for Sandia National Laboratories.
  • 2021 — Independent Business Unit Designation
    APSRC transitions to an independent business unit at Michigan Tech, reporting directly to the Vice President for Research.
  • 2022 — Growth in Defense Innovation
    APS LABS expands its defense portfolio, designing, building, and delivering an enhanced HMMWV prototype for the U.S. Army Rapid Capabilities & Critical Technologies Office.
  • 2024 — Strategic Partnership with ACM APSRC becomes the official engineering services provider for American Center for Mobility, expanding collaborative design, development, and technical integration capabilities.
  • 2025 — Organizational Realignment
    Center-wide restructuring positions APSRC for continued growth, new mission areas, and expanded impact.
  • 2026 — Secure Research Space Expansion
    An additional 7,500 ft² of secure lab space is added to support defense programs.
