Volunteering is at the heart of the Thompson Scholar experience. By giving back, Scholars honor the legacy of Robert and Ellen Thompson while building skills, connections, and a deeper sense of purpose. Through service, Thompson Scholars don’t just meet a requirement—they develop habits of leadership, compassion, and lifelong commitment to community.
Community Service
Each year, students dedicate at least 20 hours to community service.
This requirement is more than a checklist. It’s an opportunity for students to explore causes they care about, build meaningful connections, and learn how to use their time and talents to make a lasting impact.
Find opportunities and log volunteer hours through GivePulse.
What Counts as Community Service?
The following guidelines are based on Student Leadership and Involvement's service hours regulations.
Any service that directly benefits Michigan Technological University and/or conducted on campus will count towards the service hour requirement.
Examples of on-campus service include but are not limited to:
-
Supporting an admissions event (Preview Day, Open House, student panel, etc), if it’s not part of a work responsibility
-
Volunteering at Move-In, K-Day, Career Closet, Homecoming, Winter Carnival, etc. to support the overall functioning of the event
-
Ushering at the Rozsa for a performance
Activities done by your organization that benefit a wider population can count towards community service hours. This includes:
-
Hosting an event that is open to all of campus and/or the community
-
Performing for public event for Michigan Tech (i.e. Parade of Nations, sports games)
-
Planning an off-campus group service project
-
Creating/promoting educational materials that address a humanitarian issue
Time spent on activities that only benefit the membership of an organization cannot be counted as community service hours. Examples include but are not limited to:
-
Attending/leading any meetings
-
Preparing materials such as agendas or fliers
-
Marketing for your organization
-
Tabling for purposes of recruitment (i.e. K-Day, Spring Fling)
-
Any service that directly benefits a broader community such as through non-profits, community members, etc. qualify for the service hour requirement. Off-campus service is not limited to the Keweenaw community; service hours can be completed in your hometown, elsewhere in Michigan, across the country, or even internationally.
Time spent serving with a religious organization on activities that benefit a wider population can count as service hours (ex. serving meals to community members, cleaning up public roads). Service trips, such as mission trips, Mindtrekkers, alternative spring breaks, etc. can be counted for service for the hours that you are performing direct service (as defined above).
Any activities that only benefit the membership of a religious organization cannot be counted as community service hours. Examples include but are not limited to:
-
Religious instruction
-
Conducting worship service (i.e. altar guild, worship lead)
-
Proselytizing
-
Creating religious materials
-
Fundraising for a religious organization
Time on Service trips that is spent on travel, meals, sleep, exploration, cultural immersion, etc. does not count as service hours.
Self-directed projects without the oversight of a supporting community organization will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. This includes trash pick-up or recycling, tutoring, yard work, snow shoveling, baby-sitting/pet-sitting for private individuals, etc.
The following activities also do not count towards service hours:
-
Political lobbying (Non-partisan voter registration is an eligible activity)
-
Volunteer service performed as part of court-ordered community service
-
Serving only family members
-
Time spent traveling to and from a service location
-
Projects completed with any for-profit organization/business, even if the work was unpaid.
-
Participation in self-improvement workshops, clinics, conferences, new member orientation, or conventions
