The program is designed as a 40hr/week internship. Participants will engage in training, hands-on research, meeting with mentors, team building activities and more. The program has a M-F 8am to 5pm schedule.

Basic chemistry, physics and typical mathematical courses will be helpful. The program is designed to introduce participants to the various topics, so advanced knowledge is not expected.

Michigan Tech is serviced by Skywest/United Airlines at the local airport (CMX - Houghton County Memorial Airport). See additional directions to campus.

Temperatures typically range between 65 to 75 degrees. There may be a day or two where the temperature may rise, but this is rare.
Being surrounding by Lake Superior means that there are several opportunities for hiking, biking, swimming, canoeing/kayaking and fishing. Michigan Tech has its own hiking and biking trails.

Yes. Students will have access to the gym, pool and tennis center while participating in the program.

Students will participate in team building activities such as log rolling, hiking, and canoeing. Pack appropriate gear.
The participants will travel to L'Anse with their mentors and meet with the staff of the Natural Resources Department of the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community to learn about their efforts at water management and sustainability.
Participants will have the opportunity to attend the KBIC Annual Pow Wow, meet with industry leaders at Calumet Electronics, learn about reuse of copper at Koppers Inc, and more

The applications to apply for the opportunity will remian open until 5pm Eastern on May 12th, 2025. Any application or material received after that will only be considered if there is any vacancy in the program. The application portal will close at midnight on May 12th, 2025.

You will need to prepare a personal statement, a short essay about your interest in the program, official or unofficial transcript and the contact information for at least one person who can provide a professional or academic recommendation. Note: the recommender will have to submit the letter online using the link provided to them. Account for the time that it would take them to submit this letter while planning your submission.

Individual applicants will be contacted on or before May 18th, 2025 if they have been selected for the program. If you do not receive any notification, it is possible that you are waitlisted. All decisions will be finalized by May 28th, 2025.

An all weather jacket, swim wear, lab appropriate attire (long pants, close-toe shoes) and appropriate footwear (walking, hiking, water).
Pack some linen.
If you take medications on a regular basis, bring your medication and your prescription in the event you need a refill.

There is a hospital in Hancock, MI and urgent care in Houghton, MI. Make sure you have appropriate insurance information when you travel to Michigan Tech.

Yes. There is a Walmart with Pharmacy and a Walgreens. Meals will be provided by the program, however if you wish to purchase snacks there are stores close to campus and the campus is a short walk from the city downtown.

This is not recommended. The program requires that you treat it like you would a 40hrs/week internship. Participation in research, career, team building and other activities is a requirement for the successful completion of the program. Several activities are scheduled throughout the week and some on the weekends as well.
