GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) is more than a program—it’s a launchpad for student success. This federally funded initiative helps middle and high school students explore college, career, and trade school pathways, giving them the tools, confidence, and support to plan for life after graduation. From college-going opportunities to hands-on career exploration and exposure to skilled trades, GEAR UP helps students discover what fits their goals. Since 1998, this U.S. Department of Education–supported program has been opening doors nationwide and helping students see what’s possible for their futures.
In Michigan, GEAR UP is part of the impactful King-Chávez-Parks (KCP) Initiative and is hosted at every public university. At Michigan Technological University, the program partners with nine local schools to support more than 350 students. Through hands-on experiences like tutoring, mentoring, campus visits, and engaging family workshops, students gain real insight into college life and career pathways. Even more exciting—Michigan Tech offers scholarships for GEAR UP students to attend its renowned Summer Youth Programs, giving them a true taste of campus life and learning.
At its core, GEAR UP is about possibility. Whether students are dreaming of a university, community college, skilled trade, or advanced degree, the program empowers them to move forward with confidence and purpose—at no cost to participants. Now in its sixth year at Michigan Technological University, GEAR UP is celebrating a major milestone as its cohort of high school seniors prepares to step boldly into their futures—ready, motivated, and inspired.
