Competition Overview
Food insecurity is a large problem across all college campuses, including Michigan Tech. According to the 2025 Food Security Survey, 52% of MTU students don't eat balanced meals because they can't afford them, and 41% skip meals because they don't have enough food.
To help combat this, HuskyFAN is hosting the Climb The Food Pyramid Challenge for Hunger Action Month. For the month of September, donations & volunteering don't only support HuskyFAN operations, but also show your support for your college! For every donation and volunteer hour you give, points will be counted towards your college in a head on head competition. So join the effort and see if your college can be the winner!
The competition starts September 1st, and will run until the end of day September 30th.
Points are by capita of enrollment, so the College of Engineering has just as good of a chance as the College of Forest Resources and Environmental Science!
How to Get Points
Food Donations
Food donations can be brought to a volunteer in the food pantry to be weighed. For most donations, 1 pound = 5 points for the college of your choice. However, special items, as outlined in the following table, are worth differing amounts. For donations to be counted, they must be made while a volunteer is present at the pantry at the time of drop off. Off-hours donations will not be counted towards the competition. Additionally, all donations must be within the expiration date, and cannot be homemade, rusted, dented, or opened.
| Point Value (Per Unit Unless Specified) |
|
|---|---|
| Canned Beans | 8 |
| Canned Tuna & Chicken | 8 |
| Protein Shakes | 10 |
| Canned Soup | 8 |
| Flour | 8 (Per Pound) |
Volunteering
You can also get points by volunteering! If you are already a volunteer, great! For every hour you volunteer in the HuskyFAN Food Pantry, that is 8 points for your college. If you are not a volunteer yet, email huskyfan@mtu.edu to get trained and started!
In order for the points to count towards your college, you must track the hours on GivePulse with HuskyFAN. In the Review, Reflection, and Feedback section, specify which college you would like the points to go towards.
