Biography

Eduardo Barbieri is a chemical engineer with expertise in the purification of viruses and proteins for therapeutic applications. He earned his undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering from the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. In 2017, he began his graduate studies at North Carolina State University, conducting research under the mentorship of Dr. Jan Genzer, Dr. Saad Khan, and Dr. Stefano Menegatti. His doctoral research focused on peptide-based drug delivery systems with antibacterial properties and the purification of viral vectors. In particular, he examined adeno-associated viruses (AAVs) and lentiviruses through chromatography. After receiving his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering in 2023, Eduardo worked as a scientist at a biotechnology start-up, where he developed purification technologies for antibodies and viral vectors. He joined the Health Research Institute as a Research Scientist in 2025.

Research

Eduardo’s current research focuses on downstream bioprocessing using chromatography-based purification strategies. He also has hands-on experience in the production and characterization of viral vectors, with an emphasis on improving biomanufacturing processes to expand patient access to gene and cell therapies.
