Program Overview
The Health Research Institute (HRI) offers undergraduates a 10-week summer fellowship experience.
The goal of the program is to bring exemplary, external undergraduate students to Michigan Tech and prepare them for graduate-level study by gaining practical laboratory experience, working on a research project in their area of interest, receiving 1-on-1 guidance from faculty mentors, learning how to develop collaborative research projects, and preparing for careers in academia, the public sector, or industry.
At the end of their term, students will prepare a poster presentation on their work, with the guidance of their faculty mentor.

Testimonials
The HRI SURF program has been occurring at Michigan Tech for the past three years and has changed over time. Most fellowship recipients go on to pursue advanced education and training, such as applying to PhD programs, entering MD-PhD programs, or pursuing professional degrees like the PharmD.
Check out what past fellows had to say about the HRI SURF program below:
"I was able to work in multiple labs and explore areas I hadn’t even thought were connected to my interests. Now I’m imagining new possibilities for my future work."
"I really enjoyed the activities throughout the summer, from the lab symposium to exploring local trails and community events. It was a great balance of research and fun."
