Grid and Power Generation

The Grid and Power Generation Group performs research focused on the evolution of how we produce and distribute electricity in an increasingly complex world. Our work sits at the intersection of electrical engineering, data science, and system engineering, aiming to transform traditional "one-way" power grids into intelligent, resilient smart grids. Our team of researchers develop advanced control algorithms to balance the unpredictable nature of renewables—like wind and solar—with the constant supply of traditional base load generation, while investigating hardware solutions like high-capacity battery storage, photovoltaic and combining heat and power. Going beyond the larger systems, the APS LABS research team also tests and evaluates critical electronics under different environmental and performance stresses. Supporting this effort, APS LABS is the host to a US Department of Energy funded Regional Test Center (one of six in the world) with ours focused on cold and snowy weather performance of photovoltaic systems.
