The APS LABS has conducted testing on multiple optical engines for a range of customers. Optical engines are designed such that they permit the imaging of the combustion chamber during the combustion process.
The CAD drawing shown below is from a single cylinder engine based on a Ford 2.0L, 4-cylinder, DI SI engine, side-mounted injector, with four valves per cylinder. There are three optical paths in the engine.

The figure below shows the propagating flame captured in the Ford optical engine. The image on the left is the original capture, while the image on the right has been post processed to depict the flame in magenta, so as to better study the propagation of the flame.
