2025 University and Distinguished Professors Announced

The Office of the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs is pleased to congratulate Zhanping You as this year's University Professor. In addition, we congratulate Barbara Dai and Claudio Mazzoleni, this year’s Distinguished Professors.

The University Professor title recognizes faculty members who have made outstanding scholarly contributions to the University and their discipline over a substantial period of time. The Distinguished Professor title recognizes outstanding faculty members who have made substantial contributions to the University as well as their discipline and are not presently recognized through an endowed position.

Please join the Office of the Provost in extending our warmest congratulations to You, Dai and Mazzoleni on these appointments. Their dedication to scholarship, teaching and service significantly enriches the intellectual environment of Michigan Technological University.

2025 University Professor: Zhanping You
You is a distinguished researcher in civil engineering materials, with a particular expertise in bituminous and advanced asphalt materials, pavement design and sustainability. He has held the title of Distinguished Professor at MTU since 2019. During his tenure at the University, You has secured approximately $16 million in research funding from prominent agencies such as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT). In 2019, his innovative work incorporating recycled tire rubber in a project for the Kalamazoo County Road Commission earned the American Public Works Association’s Best Project Award. You is an elected Fellow of both the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and Engineering Mechanics Institute (EMI).

With an impressive record of nearly 23,000 citations and an h-index of 80, You is recognized as one of the top scientists at Michigan Tech. He has authored over 400 publications in leading journals, including the esteemed Journal of Transportation Research Board, Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering, and Construction and Building Materials. In 2023, his exceptional research was further acknowledged with the Best Paper Award at the World Transportation Convention.

Beyond his research achievements, You is highly valued by his graduate students for his exceptional teaching and mentorship. His unique teaching philosophy underscores his deep commitment to student learning, evidenced by his regular participation in CTL workshops to continuously refine his methods and prioritize educational quality in the classroom. You's dedication to his students has been recognized with the CEE Graduate Advisor of the Year award in 2018 and the Michigan Tech Exceptional Graduate Mentor Award in 2022.

2025 Distinguished Professor: Barbara Dai
Dai is a professor and the associate chair for research in the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geospatial Engineering (CEGE), and has demonstrated outstanding achievements in research, teaching and service. As a key contributor to the online Master of Science in Civil Engineering structures program, Dai has mentored 14 Ph.D. students, seven research thesis master's students, and more than 30 undergraduates. Additionally, as the associate chair for CEGE, she plays a crucial role in shaping the department’s research direction.

In the field of research of infrastructure materials with a focus on low-carbon concrete utilizing alternative and supplementary cementitious materials, as well as resilient and durable infrastructures, Dai has served as a principal investigator on numerous research projects funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), state departments of transportation, and the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE). Her publication record includes more than 120 refereed journal articles, with an impressive 88% co-authored by her students as first authors — highlighting her strong commitment to mentorship.

Dai’s Google Scholar publication h-index is 48. She received the 2017 Aerospace Engineering Best Paper Award and was consistently listed among Stanford University’s World’s top 2% of most cited scientists in 2020 and 2021. Dai is actively involved in several American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and American Concrete Institute (ACI) committees, chairs some of the World Transport Congress (WTC) committees and an ACI subcommittee, and serves as an associate editor for the ASCE Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering.

2025 Distinguished Professor: Claudio Mazzoleni
Mazzoleni is a professor of physics and director of the Atmospheric Sciences Ph.D. program at Michigan Tech. He has demonstrated exceptional leadership in atmospheric aerosol research, coupled with outstanding teaching and mentorship of students. He is recognized for his research on aerosol properties and their influence on air quality and climate, notably the optical properties of biomass burning aerosols, and aerosol transport and properties at remote sites like Pico Mountain in the Azores. He has pioneered the development of multiple instruments for characterizing aerosol and cloud properties in the laboratory and in the field.

Mazzoleni and his research team have published extensively in high-impact journals, resulting in over 9,000 citations of their work. He has established a strong externally funded research program in atmospheric physics, with support from federal and industrial sources including the National Science Foundation (NSF), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). He is also recognized for his dedicated mentorship of undergraduate students and for his collaborative publications with researchers from other prestigious institutions.

Jenny Apriesnig Named Wampler Endowed Faculty Fellow

The Office of the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs is pleased to announce that Jenny Apriesnig has been appointed as the Kevin and Renee Wampler Endowed Faculty Fellow in Business.

This fellowship was established to assist in attracting, rewarding and retaining highly talented faculty who are leaders in their field, can inspire students to think critically and creatively, and effectively integrate their research into their teaching.

Apriesnig joined the College of Business at Michigan Tech in 2018. Her research focuses on evaluating natural resource issues through a regional economic perspective. She teaches courses in both general economics and natural resources economics. Since joining Michigan Tech, Apriesnig has an impressive record of scholarly activity.

In addition to her scholarly work, Apriesnig collaborates with colleagues at Michigan Tech to conduct regionally relevant economic impact studies. This work supports local policy and decision-making by governments and businesses while also providing valuable research experience for economics students.

Michigan Tech Hosting Peace Officers Memorial Day Ceremony

In 1963, a presidential resolution designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day. Each year on this day, the country pays tribute to those men and women of law enforcement who lost their lives in the performance of their duties, holding ceremonies across the nation in observance.

Michigan Tech will be hosting this year’s Upper Peninsula Officers Memorial Service at the SDC Varsity Gym tomorrow, May 15, at 11 a.m. Prior to the service, police vehicles from across the U.P. will participate in a motorcade procession from the National Guard Readiness Center in Calumet, traveling through Calumet, Hancock and Houghton and concluding at the SDC, where the ceremony will take place. The procession will begin at 10 a.m.

The campus community and general public are invited to the ceremony to show support for the officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of their community.

Show Your Support at the Staff Service Awards!

Congratulations and thank you to all of the amazing staff members who have reached a five-year anniversary this fiscal year! Your service and commitment to Michigan Tech is admirable and we are grateful to work alongside you.

Staff members who have reached a milestone anniversary will be honored at the annual University Staff Service Awards luncheon on June 10 at noon in the MUB Ballroom. President Rick Koubek and Staff Council Chair Laurie Stark will present service awards to more than 150 individuals this year! Recent staff retirees will also be recognized.

Doors will open at 11:30 a.m. This year, a catered meal featuring a fajita bar, southwest salad and sopapillas will be provided. This event is free to all honorees who RSVP in advance. If you would like to attend the event as a guest or in support of an honoree, you may purchase a ticket online. Tickets are $14.50 and must be purchased by June 2.

Adjusted Payroll Schedule for Memorial Day

Due to the upcoming Memorial Day holiday on May 26, deadlines for payroll forms will be as follows for the pay period from May 11 through May 24 (Bi-Weekly 11). Department timekeepers are responsible for sharing this information with all employees in their departments.

The deadlines below indicate when items are due to Payroll and/or Human Resources, not to individual departments. Departments are responsible for setting internal deadlines with their employees to meet the Payroll/Human Resources deadlines.

  • Status Forms — due to Human Resources on Thursday, May 15, at noon
  • EPAF Submissions — due Thursday, May 15, at noon
  • Deduction Forms — due Tuesday, May 20, at noon
  • Electronic Time Submissions — due Friday, May 23, at noon

Sustainability Film: 'Water for Life'

The 2025 Sustainability Film Series, coordinated by Michigan Tech Office of Sustainability and Resilience, will present May’s film “Water for Life” at 7 p.m. tomorrow, May 15, in Fisher 135. The film is free and everyone is welcome to attend. The film will be followed by a facilitated discussion and refreshments.

“Water for Life” presents the powerful stories of Berta Cáceres, Francisco Pineda and Alberto Curamil — three Indigenous leaders who fought to protect their water resources from exploitation by governments and corporations, despite facing threats, corruption and violence, all while advocating for environmental justice and Indigenous rights.

Submission and Formatting 101: Master the Dissertation, Thesis and Report Process

Students who are completing a dissertation, thesis or report are invited to join the Graduate School to learn about the resources available to them to assist in scheduling their defense, formatting their documents, and submitting their documents. In one afternoon, you can learn everything you need to be successful and complete your degree in a timely fashion! Faculty and staff who assist students with submissions are also welcome to attend. Attend the entire event, or stop in for the seminar that interests you.

If you are unable to join us, the event will be taped and available online after the event. The previous semester’s seminars are always available online.

WLUC TV6 aired a segment about Michigan Tech’s 4x800 relay teams breaking University records at their regular season finale. The women’s team of Grace Folkema, Brielle Kero, Ingrid Seagren and Sam Shaver set a new record with a time of 9:21.53. The men’s team of Brandon Latta, Donavan Mattson, Lucas Seng and Austin Smelker finished with a time of 7:55.92, setting another MTU record.

Mental Health Support Live Webinars Available in May

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. At Michigan Tech, your mental health and well-being are very important to us. If you or a family member is experiencing stress, anxiety, depression or other mental health issues, we have resources for relief.

As part of your employee benefits package, Michigan Tech provides free, confidential access to ESI EAP, an excellent employee assistance program. You or an eligible family member can call and receive in-the-moment counseling and support at any time: 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. You don’t need to ask for permission or get anyone’s OK — simply call 800-252-4555.

You can also access a vast array of self-help tools and resources, including mental health assessments, through the Higher Ed EAP website. Higher Ed EAP is a division of ESI EAP, and you can log in to the site using your ESI account.

Hosted by Trinity Episcopal Church Trinity Episcopal Church will host the art installation Magdalena, an exhibition supporting grief, comfort, care, and hope by artist Lisa Gordillo, April 18-May 21. The work of art is inspired by sacred texts, ancient views of the cosmos, and the idea that sitting with our losses and our joys is a spiritual act.
