The longest-running tradition of the Rail Transportation Program (RTP), Railroad Night is the cornerstone of the RTP’s commitment to bring together interested students, industry, and faculty at Michigan Tech. With a relaxed dinner atmosphere conducive to conversation, students pursue internships and full-time positions with a host of industry representatives—many of them returning Tech graduates! An industry speaker also gives a presentation on current events and research. Previous speakers include FRA and Railroad experts and executives. Students and guests also have the opportunity to look at current rail research being done at Tech.
Railroad Night 2025 Recap
On September 8th, 2025, Michigan Tech hosted an engaging Rail Night, bringing together
60 students, faculty and industry representatives. The evening started with an interactive
industry panel discussion that was both informative and enjoyable, sparking meaningful
conversations about the rail industry.
A standout moment was the keynote speech by Craig Moorehouse, VP of Transportation
South Region for BNSF Railway and an MTU alumnus (Civil and Environmental Engineering,
2005). Craig shared his inspiring journey from student to industry leader, offering
valuable insights into his career and the future directions of the rail sector.
Additionally, Adam Sohasky, a 2009 MTU alumnus, was honored with an honorary membership
in the Railroad Engineering and Activities Club for his generous contributions to
the Railroad Engineering and Activities Club (REAC) and the rail program as a whole.
His dedication has significantly impacted the rail community at Michigan Tech.
Students and faculty took advantage of the networking opportunities, connecting with
alumni and current employees in a welcoming environment. Overall, Rail Night provided
a fantastic opportunity for students to learn more about the rail industry while building
important connections. The Rail Transportation Program and REAC want to thank the
sponsors, CN, UPRR, CPKC, Benesch, and Colliers for making the night a great success.
