Fire Safety and Emergencies

Users must familiarize themselves with the Incident Response (Personal Exposure, Spills).

This lab supplies:

  • Fire extinguisher
  • Sprinkler system

This lab does NOT supply a First Aid kit.

The Michigan Technological University emergency guide applies for all facilities on campus. In case of a fire or another emergency, refer to the University EMERGENCY GUIDE.

Chemical Safety

Users must familiarize themselves with hazardous spills and chemical exposures in the Emergency Guide.

Chemicals such as bleach, dimethyl sulfoxide, and ethanol are stored in the lab.  Chemicals brought in by users must be accompanied by a Safety Data Sheet (SDS) to go in the lab binder. Clean up spills immediately in the manner specified by the SDS corresponding to the spilled substance. If the substance is unknown, contact facility staff.

Users must familiarize themselves with the Chemical Hygiene Plan and the Incident Response (Personal Exposure, Spills).

  • Disposal units for sharps and broken glass
  • Emergency shower
  • Eyewash
  • Safety Data Sheets
  • Sink for washing hands

General Biological Safety

Users must familiarize themselves with the Biosafety Manual and the Incident Response (Personal Exposure, Spills).

  • Autoclave
  • Biological Safety Cabinet
  • Biological spill kits

  • Disposal units for biohazardous waste, sharps, and broken glass
  • Emergency shower

  • Refrigeration
