Michigan Tech shared facilities support interdisciplinary and guest research by providing communal space, tools, and equipment. The Materials Characterization Fabrication Facility (MCFF) is open to all University research units interested in materials characterization research. Services are determined by the director under the guidance of the chair of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering.
The director provides these primary services:
- Ensures MCFF equipment is operational, including maintenance and repair of existing tools and new tools
- Trains MCFF users
- Assists researchers and students in developing process plans for their research
- Assists course laboratories that utilize MCFF resources

MCFF offers services by instrument, such as training, sample preparation, and sample analysis.
