The Physics Learning Center is a resource for all physics students. It is a comfortable learning environment where you can drop by during regular hours, or sign up for weekly appointments or team-learning groups. Problem-solving and study skills are emphasized. Successful student coaches, who receive continual training for professional development, staff the center.

Physics coaching is available for the following courses:

  • PH1110 College Physics I
  • PH1140 Applied College Physics I
  • PH1210 College Physics II
  • PH1240 Applied College Physics II
  • PH2100 University Physics I—Mechanics
  • PH2200 University Physics II—Electricity and Magnetism

One-on-One Appointments

One-on-one appointments offer individualized instruction in physics problem solving and general study skills from physics coaches.

Students can sign up for a weekly one-hour appointment with a coach. New sign up sheets are posted outside the Physics Learning Center the first week of each semester. Assignments to specific coaches are made on a first come, first served basis.

Team Learning

Students meet two hours per week with a team of four to six other students in the same introductory physics course (PH1110, PH1210, PH2100, or PH2200). Students work under the direction of a physics coach to learn a team approach to solving physics problems.

Students sign up for teams at the Physics Learning Center during the first week of the semester.

Become a Coach

Becoming a Physics Learning Center coach requires commitment and a desire to provide direction and support to physics students as they strive for academic success.

Preference in hiring is given to:

  • Undergraduate students at Michigan Tech
  • Those with excellent communication skills
  • Those with an excellent background in physics and math. Applicants must have completed PH2100 or PH1160 and PH2200 or PH2260.
  • • Those with significant time remaining before graduation
  • Those with past teaching or coaching experience
