Successful By Design

Seven sketches of women in gowns on a table with female hands shown holding them in a costume design shop.

“The two biggest factors in my choice of Tech were the engineering and VPA departments,” says Sarah Jo Martens ‘19 ’20 (CEGE). “The fact that I could combine both was essential for my life and education. The combination has enhanced my engineering degree with soft skills like public speaking, creative thinking and empathy that are essential for my career now.”

Martens is one of three students who share their experiences as Michigan Tech Magazine steps behind the curtain for a peek at theatrical mastery with costume designer Mary Cyr (VPA) — and previews the production season ahead.

'The Misinformation Edition' Exhibit Reception and Keynote Talk

Join us for the opening reception of "The Misinformation Edition" exhibit, on display Monday (Oct. 25) until Nov. 21 in the Van Pelt and Opie Library.

The reception will be held Wednesday (Oct. 27) from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the library, and will feature a keynote talk by Joan Donovan on "The True Cost of Misinformation." Light refreshments will be served.

The talk will explore the ways in which social media companies are trying to patch the holes in a failing sociotechnical system, where the problems their products have created are now shouldered by journalists, universities and health professionals, just to name a few. It will further promote discussion about what can be done to restore moral and technical order in a time of pandemonium.

Donovan is the research director of the Harvard Kennedy School’s Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics and Public Policy and the director of the Technology and Social Change project (TaSC). She is a specialist in media manipulation, political movements, critical internet studies and online extremism. Her work explores how media manipulation is a means to control public conversation, derail democracy and disrupt society.

The talk will be broadcast at the Van Pelt and Opie Library and also hosted via Zoom.

This event is made possible in part by a grant from the Michigan Humanities, an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, and by funding from the Department of Humanities at Michigan Tech.

Join the Rozsa Volunteer Usher Corps

The Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts is looking for volunteers to join their team of Volunteer Ushers. The next opportunity to volunteer is tomorrow (Oct. 22) at 6 p.m. for Backstage Jazz: Jazz Meets Hiphop featuring Osman Koç Installation.

What do volunteer ushers do?
This season is full of exceptional, innovative and fun performances. Volunteer ushers play a critical role in creating a welcoming environment as our community reconnects for vibrant live arts experiences. You could fill one of several positions: greeter, ticket scanner, program helper or seating guide, or be a floating usher who fills in where they are needed.

Do I do this alone or with other people?
You will never be alone! Each show will have a house manager and 2-12 volunteer ushers, depending on the size of the event. You are always welcome to put together a group — friends, family or people from an organization — and enjoy the shared experience of bringing a production to life.

What experience or training do I need?
You don’t need any. All the training you need will take place the day of the show, before guests arrive.

What is the time commitment for a show?
You will arrive 90 minutes before the show, monitor the audience while you enjoy the show for free, and then stay to help with some light cleanup for 30 minutes or less after the show.

Visit the Rozsa Volunteer page or email Samantha Hoover at shoover@mtu.edu to learn more and become a volunteer usher.

Michigan Tech strongly recommends that all employees and students receive the COVID-19 vaccine and continue with handwashing and hand-sanitizing practices, especially in light of the virulence of the COVID-19 delta variant. Please be aware that if you are exposed to COVID-19, quarantine guidelines vary depending on vaccination status.

In Level Two, students and employees are not required to monitor their symptoms daily prior to coming to campus. But, individuals should be mindful of their own symptoms. A useful monitoring tool is available from the CDC.

Biological Seminar Series

The speaker for the next Biological Seminar Series is Jalene LaMontagne, who will present "Conifer reproduction across scales: What are their patterns, drivers, and impacts of climate change?"

The seminar will be held today (Oct. 21) from 3-4 p.m. via Zoom.

From the abstract:
Patterns of tree reproduction have implications for forest regeneration and as a resource pulse for seed consumers. A common reproductive patterns in perennial plants is mast seeding, which is described by high temporal variability and widespread spatial synchrony. ... Our recent work on white spruce mast seeding in the North American boreal forest at a continental scale has revealed an 'ecological dipole', characterized by significant asynchrony in high reproduction 'mast seeding' events in eastern and western North America. The spatial extent of weather patterns influences spatial and temporal mast seeding patterns. Experimental work on experimental warming and elevated CO2 impacts on conifer reproduction will also be presented.
