3MT Registration Closing Tomorrow

The registration for the Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition ends tomorrow (Oct. 23) at 11:59 p.m.

If you have not registered, register now! You do not need to have your slide or the presentation ready to register for the competition.

3MT will be held on Nov. 4. This year we are coming back to an entirely in-person format, with the final round at The Orpheum Theater in Hancock. The winner and runners-up will receive cash prizes of $300 and $150, respectively. Additionally, a People's Choice award will be given to a speaker selected by the audience, with a cash prize of $100.

This competition offers an excellent opportunity for graduate students across the University to present their research to a broader audience. It celebrates the exciting research conducted by graduate students. It is designed to test and enhance graduate students’ capacity to verbally summarize and explain their research in just three minutes or less in a language appropriate to a nonspecialist audience.

Important dates:

  • Saturday, Oct. 23 — Registration closes at 11:59 p.m.
  • Monday, Oct. 25 — Optional training session at 5 p.m.
  • Thursday, Nov. 4 — Preliminary rounds from 12-4 p.m. in the MUB Ballroom.
  • Thursday, Nov. 4 — Final round from 6-8 p.m. at The Orpheum Theater in Hancock (shuttle service will be provided).

We invite and encourage all graduate students to take advantage of this amazing competition and help make it a success. For complete event information and to register, please visit GSG's Three Minute Thesis page.

For any questions or cause for hesitation, please contact Shreya Joshi at gsg-research@mtu.edu.

Human Resources Offices Closed This Afternoon

The Human Resources Office located at the Lakeshore Center will close at 11:30 a.m today (Oct. 22) for a departmental meeting. It will reopen this afternoon at 1:30 p.m.

Comedian Melissa McGillicuddy

Join us for a night of laughs on next Friday (Oct. 29) at 10 p.m. in the MUB Ballroom! Melissa McGillicuddy is a stand-up comedian based in Sacramento, California.

Being an only (and super gay) child raised by a single mom in a conservative town, McGillicuddy found she didn’t always fit in, so she used humor as a way to connect with people. She also co-produces the Moving Van Show, a monthly, secret pop-up comedy show, as well as Sacramento FemmeFest, the city's first all-female comedy festival.

This event is free and open to everyone!

Please note: Show contains college humor.

ADVANCE Weekly Roundup: Safety Is Everyone's Responsibility

Safety in any workplace, whether corporate or academic, is not achieved by just providing students, faculty and staff with appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to conduct their research or work safely. Creating safety in the workplace also includes intentionally crafting a psychologically safe environment where individuals feel they can speak up, express their concerns and be heard.

The author of “The Fearless Organization” describes how the culture of psychological safety is evident when individuals can voice half-finished thoughts, are willing to admit lack of knowledge, listen humbly and engage in dynamic dialogue to learn and adopt what is best for students, faculty and staff. The author notes, “As organizations seek to convert diversity into inclusion and belonging, psychological safety is increasingly important. Without psychological safety, diversity does not automatically mean people can bring their full selves to the work.” Thus, you can think of psychological safety as the PPE for a diverse and inclusive workplace. The difference here is that the entire group provides protection rather than requiring each individual to protect themselves.

CTL Coffee Chat: Computerized Classroom Testing

During remote teaching, many instructors learned how to leverage Canvas or other computerized tools for quizzes and exams. These tools offered advantages like automatic grading, the use of question banks and the ability to easily randomize correct answers to increase integrity. Remote proctoring, meanwhile, offered significant challenges.

As we’ve returned to the classroom, infrastructure has been put in place to allow computerized testing in university classrooms. This allows more conventional proctoring while taking advantage of the efficiencies and higher integrity of computerized exams.

In this Coffee Chat session, planned for Nov. 4 from 3:30-4:30 p.m. in Grover C. Dillman Hall (Dillman) Room 204, we’ll explore that computerized testing infrastructure, along with ideas and best practices for giving computer-based exams and quizzes in classrooms.

Register for the session.

Reminders

Face Coverings Required in Classrooms, Labs, Library

Michigan Tech remains at Health and Safety Level TwoFace coverings are required in certain locations — classrooms and laboratories during classes and lab courses, and in the library — and may also be required during instructors' office hours. In all other settings, face coverings are encouraged but not required. This applies to all students, employees, and visitors, regardless of vaccination status.

Michigan Tech strongly recommends that all employees and students receive the COVID-19 vaccine and continue with handwashing and hand-sanitizing practices, especially in light of the virulence of the COVID-19 delta variant. Please be aware that if you are exposed to COVID-19, quarantine guidelines vary depending on vaccination status.

In Level Two, students and employees are not required to monitor their symptoms daily prior to coming to campus. But, individuals should be mindful of their own symptoms. A useful monitoring tool is available from the CDC.

10-Digit Dialing Requirement

Effective Sunday (Oct. 24), all local calls from campus phones will require full 10-digit dialing (8 + 1 + 906-XXX-XXXX).

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has adopted 988 as a new three-digit number for the National Suicide and Mental Health Crisis Lifeline, starting July 16, 2022. In order for 988 to work nationwide, 10-digit local dialing must be implemented. This change affects 82 area codes across the country, including the 906 area code.

You can start dialing with 10 digits now in preparation for this change. If you forget, seven-digit dialing will continue to work until Sunday. No cost is incurred for local dialing using either seven- or 10-digit dialing.

If you have any questions, we can help. Contact IT at it-help@mtu.edu or call 906-487-1111.

Join the Rozsa Volunteer Usher Corps

The Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts is looking for volunteers to join their team of Volunteer Ushers. The next opportunity to volunteer is today (Oct. 22) at 6 p.m. for Backstage Jazz: Jazz Meets Hiphop featuring Osman Koç Installation.

What do volunteer ushers do?
This season is full of exceptional, innovative and fun performances. Volunteer ushers play a critical role in creating a welcoming environment as our community reconnects for vibrant live arts experiences. You could fill one of several positions: greeter, ticket scanner, program helper or seating guide, or be a floating usher who fills in where they are needed.

Do I do this alone or with other people?
You will never be alone! Each show will have a house manager and 2-12 volunteer ushers, depending on the size of the event. You are always welcome to put together a group — friends, family or people from an organization — and enjoy the shared experience of bringing a production to life.

What experience or training do I need?
You don’t need any. All the training you need will take place the day of the show, before guests arrive.

What is the time commitment for a show?
You will arrive 90 minutes before the show, monitor the audience while you enjoy the show for free, and then stay to help with some light cleanup for 30 minutes or less after the show.

Visit the Rozsa Volunteer page or email Samantha Hoover at shoover@mtu.edu to learn more and become a volunteer usher.
