Up and Moving

Through a graduate exercise physiology course taught by Steven Elmer (KIP) nearly a dozen students worked together to create a program called UP and Moving that aims to keep adults physically active during the pandemic and beyond. The program delivers free, live and recorded workouts for community members to do in their homes. Since their first workout broadcast in October 2020, the team has produced hundreds of videos — all available on their YouTube channel. The program has engaged students, staff, faculty, alumni and community members of all ages from Calumet to Newark, from Canada to Texas.

Elmer, along with lead graduate student Isaac Wedig, has been advocating for the importance of staying physically active during the pandemic. Evidence now indicates that physical inactivity — only a couple hours of movement per week — is one of strongest risk factors for developing severe illness from COVID-19.

Accessible Document Workshop

Are your documents born accessible? Not sure? Attend an accessible document workshop and find out.

If your job involves creating documents to share with colleagues or students, or to post online, you need to ensure they are usable by everyone. Unintended digital barriers in documents can prevent some people from accessing the information.

To learn more about document accessibility, the Accessible Technology Working Group (ATWG) will present a workshop to explain what digital accessibility is and why documents need to be accessible. We’ll cover the best practices for documents created in Microsoft Word and Google Docs, including the proper use of headings; providing text descriptions for important images; creating accessible lists, tables and links; and the effective use of color in your documents.

The one-hour workshop will be offered Nov. 2 at 2 p.m. and Nov. 10 at 10 a.m. in the Van Pelt and Opie Library, Room 242. Computers will be available for you to practice your new skills on a practice document, or you can bring your own document to check its accessibility status.

Register for the workshop using the links below. Contact Jeff Toorongian at jetooron@mtu.edu, or Amy Blake at alblake@mtu.edu with any questions.

Biological Seminar Series

The speaker for the next Biological Seminar Series is Jalene LaMontagne, who will present "Conifer reproduction across scales: What are their patterns, drivers, and impacts of climate change?"

The seminar will be held Thursday (Oct. 21) from 3-4 p.m. via Zoom.

From the abstract:
Patterns of tree reproduction have implications for forest regeneration and as a resource pulse for seed consumers. A common reproductive patterns in perennial plants is mast seeding, which is described by high temporal variability and widespread spatial synchrony. ... Our recent work on white spruce mast seeding in the North American boreal forest at a continental scale has revealed an 'ecological dipole', characterized by significant asynchrony in high reproduction 'mast seeding' events in eastern and western North America. The spatial extent of weather patterns influences spatial and temporal mast seeding patterns. Experimental work on experimental warming and elevated CO2 impacts on conifer reproduction will also be presented.

Soccer Defeats Northwood, Davenport

The Michigan Tech soccer team notched two victories on the road this weekend, improving to 9-4 on the season and 6-3 in the GLIAC and finishing the week in third place in GLIAC conference standings.

The Huskies started the road trip on the right foot, defeating Northwood 1-0 on Friday (Oct. 15). The Huskies' goal came off the foot of Grace Shaw, with an assist by Jesse Jacobusse. Gracie VanLangevelde came up big in goal, stopping all five shots she saw in the contest.

"Gracie made some key saves for us today," coach Turk Ozturk said. "The back line helped hold down the fort and get the win. I am super proud of our effort today. Northwood is a hard-working team and has a lot of talent. We battled hard for these points."

MTU picked up their third straight victory on Sunday (Oct. 17), taking down the Davenport Panthers 1-0. Again, the lone goal came from Huskies co-captain Grace Shaw, who scored on a header in the 25th minute off a corner kick from Brooke Schauer. Erika Gabriel was in goal and posted the shutout for Tech, stopping all three shots she faced — it was her third shutout on the season, and she currently leads GLIAC goalkeepers with a 0.34 goals-against average.

“It was an all-around team effort to get another shutout,” Ozturk said. “We defended well and we are excited to get back home and get ready for a big weekend next weekend.”

Hockey Falls to Notre Dame, USNDTP

The No. 16 Michigan Tech hockey team was winless this weekend.

MTU fell 2-1 in overtime to No. 17 Notre Dame in the home-opener for the Huskies on Friday (Oct. 15) at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena. Ryland Mosley tied the game for the Huskies in the final minute, but the Fighting Irish found the back of the net with 5.3 seconds left in overtime.

"That's a loss that hurts, and we're all feeling it in the locker room," Tech coach Joe Shawhan said. "We didn't play very well in the first half of the game but things got better as the game went on.

"We made a bad turnover on the game-winner, but you have to give credit to Notre Dame. They played hard to win and deserved to win. It's something we have to learn from."

The Huskies fell 2-1 in exhibition play to the USA Hockey National Team Development Program (USNTDP) on Saturday (Oct. 16) at the Mac. Brian Halonen scored the lone goal for Tech in the first period.

"I thought it was a good hockey game," Shawhan said. "I thought it had a lot of pace, grind and compete. I liked what we saw out of a lot of guys. We had growth out of our team from last night. We didn't make too many mistakes, but the ones we did make they capitalized on."

Volleyball Undefeated at Crossover Tournament

The No. 25-ranked Michigan Tech volleyball team went undefeated at the Midwest Regional Crossover tournament in Hammond, Indiana, over the weekend.

The Huskies extended their winning streak to nine with a pair of wins over GLVC opponents Friday (Oct. 16) at the Hammond Sportsplex. They swept No. 16 Lewis to start the day and defeated Missouri S&T 3-2 in the evening match.

During the tournament, Olivia Ghormley set the school record for career kills. She entered the day 10 shy of holding the record and hit the mark early in the third set against the Flyers. Ghormley wrapped up the day with 18 kills and has 1,555 for her career to lead all active NCAA Division II players.

"What a big first day at the crossover for the Huskies," Tech coach Matt Jennings said. "To come out and start the weekend with that win over Lewis was huge. To follow it up with a five-set comeback was really a great way to finish the day."

"Our backcourt once again shut down a really strong offense and got our offense the kind of second-chance scoring opportunities we needed," Jennings continued. "I'm proud of the poise we showed in pressure situations and can't say enough about the toughness our group showed today."

MTU swept No. 17 Hillsdale Saturday (Oct. 16) to close out the Crossover, winning their 10th straight game. The Huskies won 25-15, 25-23 and 27-25 to snap Hillsdale's 16-game winning streak.

"To say this was a big weekend for our program would be a bit of an understatement," Jennings said. "The confidence that comes from performing the way we did against these quality teams is priceless. I'm impressed with the balance and poise we played with as we battled out there, never giving up or getting rattled under pressure.  No doubt about it, we came down here and made a statement and put ourselves in a very strong position in the region."

Football Wins 11th Straight Miner's Cup

For the 11th straight season, the Michigan Tech football team defeated rival Northern Michigan for the Miner's Cup, winning 21-14 at the Superior Dome in a GLIAC conference game.

Tied 14-14 late in the fourth quarter, MTU quarterback Will Ark delivered an eight-yard strike to a wide-open Jordan Janssen on a slant down the right sideline, giving the Huskies the final lead with just 18 seconds to play and the victory. John Paramski also made a crucial fourth quarter interception to help turn the momentum.

"It's awesome," said senior linebacker John Paramski. "We knew they were going to come out and play hard on their home field like they always do. We knew we had to play all the way to the end as hard as we could and I was proud we came out on top."

"It means a lot to us," said senior wide receiver Hunter Richards. "First of all, hats off to Northern. They always give us their best effort out there. To fight through that adversity and prove it to ourselves that we could win late, I think that it shows a lot about this team."

On the Road

John Jaszczak, director and curator of the A. E. Seaman Mineral Museum, installed a display at the 2021 Greater Detroit Gem Mineral & Fossil Show,
held Oct. 8-10.

The display featured two copper chisel fans and copper chisel chips — artifacts crafted by miners using chisels out of giant masses of native copper. One of the copper fans, rescued from the ashes of a 1937 house fire in Copper Falls by William Clark, is prominently on display in the museum, along with its story.

Also displayed at the show was a large chisel found at the Central Mine and a large mass of native copper. On Oct. 8 and 9, Jaszczak also gave an illustrated lecture at the show on "Magnificent Microminerals from Merelani, Tanzania."
