Meet the Transfer Assistant
Transfer Assistants are current Michigan Tech transfer students who are trained to provide peer support, answer questions, plan networking events, and more. They can be great resources for information, campus news, and friendship—take a minute and get to know our current Transfer Assistant.
Hello! My name is Travis Slooter and I am the Transfer Assistant for the Waino Wahtera Center for Student Success 2014-2015. I am a 5th year Anthropology major. I experienced Michigan Tech in the summer of 2012 on a summer research program where I worked with the Industrial Archaeology department as we opened a dig site at Cliff Mine, about 30 minutes north of Tech. I stayed in Wadsworth Hall for that summer and had quite the enlightening experience. I instantly fell in love with Michigan Tech and the inherent beauty of the Keweenaw Peninsula. I transferred in the fall of 2013 and live off campus in my own place in Chassell with my husky, Dakota. I am currently the President of the Competition Rifle Team at Michigan Tech, Orientation Team Leader for the summer of 2014, and a member of the Mach 7 Animation production team. After Michigan Tech, I plan to pursue a Masters degree in Higher Education Administration/Student Affairs at an undecided university at the current time.
If I were to give any advice to transfer students, I would begin with GET ENGAGED. All too often, transfer students fall into a routine of going to class than going home or to their room in their residence hall. It's vital for their success to try a couple of clubs or organizations on campus that have shared interests or try something new. This provides them with the opportunity to meet new people and earn a new perspective and admiration for Michigan Tech. Also, never be afraid to ask questions or for help.
