Endowed Chairs and Faculty Positions in Sustainability

Michigan Technological University announces a Sustainability faculty hiring initiative that will add ten tenure-track positions, open in rank, during the next year. Applications and Nominations are invited. The new positions include three endowed chairs and seven tenure track positions.

The three endowed chairs are:

  • the Robbins Chair in Sustainable Management of the Environment
  • the Robbins Chair in Sustainable Manufacturing and Design
  • the Robbins Chair in Sustainable Use of Materials

Faculty selected for the Robbins chairs will be leaders in their fields and have outstanding research experience. Successful candidates for the remaining tenure track positions will have outstanding records in their field for respective stages in their careers. They will be expected to develop active research programs and to collaborate in multi-disciplinary research, education, and outreach efforts.

Sustainability underpins scholarship on a university-wide scale at Michigan Technological University. Faculty from areas such as engineering, forestry, humanities, business, and the natural and social sciences are actively involved in multi-disciplinary research and education. We develop processes, policies, technologies, and materials that promote sustainable use of natural resources, sustainable energy sources and consumption, sustainable enterprises and communities, and access to clean air and water in both the developed and developing worlds.

Nominators should ensure nominees are willing to accept their nominations, and provide a brief biography of the nominee, and full contact information for both the nominator and the nominee (fax, e-mail, telephone number and mailing address). All materials will be treated confidentially. Nominations should be sent to provost@mtu.edu.

Applicants are asked to provide their application materials as a single PDF document, and send the material to provost@mtu.edu. The PDF should contain the following sections:

  • Cover letter that addresses:
    • Your ability to collaborate with current sustainability efforts or enhance projects or areas that are developing
    • Whether you are applying for one of the Robbins Research Chairs, a faculty position, or both
    • Current/expected academic rank
    • Institutes and/or departments that most closely match your interests
    • Thematic interest area (in the broad sense of Water, Air, Energy, or Materials)

  • Full curriculum vitae that includes at least the following information: degrees and dates of award, thesis topics and supervisors/mentors, peer-reviewed publications, other publications, conference presentations, awards and distinctions, teaching experience, including courses taught, research funding (distinguishing external and federal research awards). Please indicate which of the items relate to the theme of sustainability.
  • A 1-page summary curriculum vitae that summarizes lifetime achievements, total numbers of peer-reviewed publications, career path, etc.   
  • A two-page (limit) discussion of how your research fits within the theme of “Sustainability”
  • A two-page (limit) statement of research and teaching interests in existing and emerging areas at Michigan Tech.
  • Full contact information for three references, including fax, telephone number, e-mail and address, and a sentence describing their relationship to you and your work (if they are to be contacted you will be contacted first)

We intend to develop a diverse applicant pool from a wide range of disciplines related to this strategic initiative. Applications received by December 15, 2007 will receive first consideration, but applications will be considered until all positions are filled.
