Pure mathematicians study mathematics for its own sake. Although Michigan Tech's Department of Mathematical Sciences is largely focused on applied mathematics and statistics, its faculty often address purely mathematical questions that arise in the course of their work. In addition, some members of the department work primarily in pure mathematics.
