One of your first questions probably is “Where does my student go when they get sick?” While Michigan Tech does not have a University-operated student health center, students do have convenient access to quality healthcare through the University’s partnership with Portage Health. Portage Health operates the Portage Health University Center, located on campus inside of the Student Development Complex (SDC). Just up the hill from the main campus, this center offers trained family providers and nursing staff, lab and x-ray services, and an on-site pharmacy. Michigan Tech students are seen by appointment during regular clinic hours, and special effort is made to schedule students in need of medical care on short notice. There are also walk-in hours for students Mondays, 1:30 PM to 3:30 PM and Tuesday through Friday, 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM

For medical emergencies, students should contact the Emergency Department at the Portage Health hospital in Hancock by calling 906-483-1111. This hospital is a short drive (ten minutes) from Michigan Tech’s campus and is staffed with emergency-trained physicians twenty-four hours a day.
There are also two walk-in clinics in Houghton that provide care for non-emergent illnesses or injuries. The Aspirus Keweenaw FastCare Clinic is located inside Shopko and can be reached at 906-483-0668. The Portage Health Houghton Express Care clinic is located on Sharon Avenue and can be reached at 906-483-1149.
Counseling Services at Michigan Tech provides support services and programming to meet the emotional wellness needs of students. Services provided by Counseling Services include academic and personal counseling, group counseling and education, evaluation and screening, and educational programs, presentations, and workshops on wellness-related issues. Students may meet one-on-one with a trained clinician in a confidential setting to discuss everything from relationship issues to time-management skills, and to learn strategies for stress management and coping with depression.
