The Department of Public Safety and Police Services provides law enforcement and crime prevention services to the Michigan Tech campus community. The department’s staff, comprising certified dispatchers and state of Michigan police officers, conducts regular campus patrols, provides educational programming, and responds to campus emergencies. Services provided to students include the Safe-Walk escort program, emergency blue-light phone locations across campus, bike and weapons registration, and parking. Encourage your student to practice the following habits to help ensure their safety while on campus:
- Walk in lighted areas and with others whenever possible
- Lock the door(s) to their residence hall room, house, or apartment
- Keep their vehicle locked, especially while parked in campus lots
- Be aware of their surroundings and know the locations of emergency phones
- Report any concerns about safety or theft
- Leave any situation immediately in which he or she feels uncomfortable or is suspicious of others in his or her presence
- Know and understand the federal and state laws, as well as the University’s policies and procedures
- Trust their instincts
