Transfer Student On-Campus Living

In recent years, many renovations were made to the residence halls to support the success of students in the communities. Check out the Housing and Residential Life website for more information on what comes with your room, as well as how much space you have to fit your and your roommate's items. Planning ahead will help to prevent conflicts you might have with a roommate.

Living With a Roommate

• Be candid with your roommate(s) about expectations, and complete a Roommate Agreement, which is available from your Resident Assistant. This agreement will help you work out all the details of your living situation, including schedules (e.g., when you expect to study and sleep), the sharing of belongings, and the tidiness of your room.
• Be considerate of each other's needs. Each person experiences college differently. Respect each other, and work together to make a good transition.
• Be patient—don't expect drastic changes in behavior overnight. Working through rooming problems takes time.
• Communication is key to working out any issue. Do not worsen the situation by ignoring the problem or complaining about it to friends and family. Be upfront with your roommate(s).
• Get out of your room, and get involved—there are many activities awaiting you at Michigan Tech. Take advantage of the resources available to you on campus, including study and recreational areas. Invite your roommate(s) to go along, and continue to foster your friendship.
• You might have your own room at home, but moving into the residence halls is a completely different story. Suddenly one room is your whole house. When packing, be attentive to what you bring and make a concerted effort to leave nonessentials at home for the time being.

Packing for On-Campus Life

• Contact your roommate(s) soon after receiving your housing assignment letter in late July to become acquainted with each other and to coordinate supplies and furniture for your room.
• Don't worry if you forget something—there is a Wal-Mart Supercenter, ShopKo, and OfficeMax just five minutes from campus.
• The Campus Bookstore, located in the Memorial Union Building (MUB) on campus, is a good source for academic items, too.
