Activities

Participation in activities beyond the core AFROTC program requirements is optional. Many cadets still find time for extracurricular activities organized by the detachment because they enjoy the camaraderie and wish to broaden their college experience.

Events and Activities

  • Winter Carnival—AFROTC placed first in the month-long statue category for student organizations in 2012. Detachment 400 also participated in Winter Carnival events including snow volleyball, human dogsled races, and stage review.
  • Fall Dining Out and Spring Military Ball—Formal events where cadets may bring guests and experience a military ceremonial dinner, usually with special guests and a guest speaker
  • 9/11 Ceremony—Every year on the anniversary of 9/11, cadets may take part in Michigan Tech's "In Honor and Remembrance" ceremony.
  • MWR (Morale, Welfare, and Recreation)—Events held throughout the year, such as rock climbing, hiking and camping trips, intramural and broomball teams, game and movie nights, low-ropes course, intramural team sports, and hiking
  • Arctic Blast Drill Team—Cadets learn in-depth drill and ceremonies through weekly meetings and participate in semester performances.
  • Greater Michigan Awards—Cadets may be nominated for awards by cadre and have the opportunity to travel (often by military air) to awards ceremonies and to tour military facilities.
