Applications Open, Funding Available for Visiting Professor Program

The Office of the Provost would like to remind you that funds are still available for the 2023-24 academic year to invite scholars, potential faculty or research collaborators to Michigan Tech’s campus for the spring and summer semesters. Current available funds can be used for visits between January and September 2024. This funding is available thanks to the state of Michigan King-Chávez-Parks (KCP) Visiting Professor Program (VPP).

University departments or units are invited to apply for financial support to bring visiting scholars who provide underrepresented perspectives in their field of expertise to Michigan Tech’s campus. Visitors do not need a terminal degree or hold a faculty position to qualify for support. Supported visits can be as short as an afternoon, up to a week or longer. While on campus, visiting professors should interact with faculty and students in the classroom, in seminars, in informal and formal group discussions, or teach a session during an academic or summer semester.

Applications must be received one month before a proposed visit for pre-approval by the state of Michigan. Funding requests can be made for up to $1,500. However, department(s) or unit(s) must provide a 1-to-1 match to KCP funds.

Learn more about the Visiting Professor Program, including its purpose and the application process. If you have any questions regarding the program, please contact Shannon Vairo, manager of partner engagement and faculty support.

Blake Pietila Named CCHA Goaltender of Month

Michigan Tech hockey goaltender Blake Pietila is the CCHA Goaltender of the Month for December.

It's the seventh time in Pietila's career that he has been named the conference goaltender of the month. He went 3-2-1 between the pipes with only one regulation loss in December, holding a 2.31 goals-against average and a .932 save percentage.

He also anchored the Huskies in their 12th Great Lakes Invitational title and was named to the GLI All-Tournament Team after stopping a career-high 54 shots and all three chances in the shootout against No. 7 Michigan State. He made 23 saves the day before in a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over Alaska in the semifinal.

Pietila's other December wins were over Bowling Green (Dec. 2) with 31 saves and Northern Michigan (Dec. 8) with 29 saves. He backstopped Tech's penalty kill, which went 14-for-15 in the month.

Request for Proposals: Round 3 Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Grants

The Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Tech Forward Working Group (AMMTF WG) seeks proposals from University researchers that will advance its mission to develop and strengthen the materials processing and manufacturing capabilities at Michigan Tech to meet next-generation research opportunities. Faculty and/or staff with relevant interests and expertise across all University units are welcomed and encouraged to submit proposals.

More information regarding potential topics of interest can be found at the Institute of Advanced Materials and Manufacturing website.

Seed Project Grants will be funded at a $10,000 level for up to a six-month period of performance. In addition, more substantive Capability Enhancement Grants will be funded at up to an approximate $50,000 level for projects that can provide extended benefits by establishing unique capabilities or facilities that can be accessed by multiple investigators for multiple grant opportunities over several grant campaigns.

Proposals should be limited to two pages in length. Proposals should contain a summary description of the project, a discussion and analysis of the return-on-investment opportunities in service to the mission as described above and a brief description of budget items. Proposals that demonstrate significant opportunities for external follow-on funding involving several investigators and units will be favorably reviewed.

Proposals are due before the close of the business day nest Friday (Jan. 12) and should be emailed to the Institute at iamm@mtu.edu. Deliverables will be negotiated with the AMMTF WG during the final project discussion.

Contingent on availability of remaining funds, a second proposal campaign may be initiated prior to the end of fiscal year 2024.
