HRI 2022 Fall Fellowship Awards Announced

The Health Research Institute (HRI) at Michigan Tech is pleased to announce Fall Fellowship awardees for 2022. Congratulations to all recipients.

Mike Abbott Receives John Hugus Leadership Award from CXC

Mike Abbott has received the John Hugus Leadership Award from Central Cross Country Skiing Inc. (CXC).

Abbott retired from the Vice President for Research Office in 2021. He is a member of Michigan Tech's Nordic Race Organizing Committee and has been integral in all aspects of sport development, implementation and accessibility at MTU. 

He has been referred to as "the grandfather of skiing at Michigan Tech" for his wide influence in the ski community and is known to be the first to arrive and the last to leave when he's helping at ski events.

Robert Nemiroff (Physics) was quoted by Bioengineer.org in a story about recent recognition of the NASA Astronomy Picture of the Day website. The APOD site was honored by the International Astronomical Union for its decades of outreach.

Texas Monthly quoted Audra Morse (CEGE) in a story about the potential use of okra and other plant-based extracts as flocculants — attractors of microplastics and other suspended solids — during wastewater treatment.

A story on research by Pengfei Xue (CEGE/GLRC) that predicts baseline water levels in Lakes Superior, Michigan-Huron, and Erie to rise 20 to 50 centimeters by 2050 as a result of climate change was picked up by Coastal News Today, Phys.org, Meteorological Technology International, Fishing Wire and Samachar Central.

Science Daily, Labiotech.eu and News Azi picked up a story about a new virus-fighting design for N95 face masks. Caryn Heldt (ChE) and graduate students Vaishali Sharma (BioSci) and Sneha Singh (ChE) contributed to the research behind the design.

WisBusiness reported that Michigan Tech’s campus will be the site of its Sept. 8 Fox Cities Days event. Select Fox Cities businesses will participate in the campus visit to tell students about career opportunities in the region.

The Fox Cities encompass 18 communities located in east-central Wisconsin along the Fox River and Lake Winnebago.

NJBIZ reported that Michigan Tech alumna Roxane Gay, a bestselling author and educator, was selected as the next Gloria Steinem Endowed Chair in Media, Culture and Feminist Studies at Rutgers University-New Brunswick.

New Funding

Xiaoyong Yuan (AC/ICC) is the principal investigator (PI) on a project that received a $409,355 research and development grant from the National Science Foundation.

The project is titled "Collaborative Research: SHF: Small: Artificial Intelligence of Things (AIoT): Theory, Architecture, and Algorithms."

Lan Zhang (ECE/ICC) is the co-PI on this potential three-year project.

Reminder

Campus Bookstore, University Images Closing for Inventory

The Campus Bookstore will close at 2 p.m. today (June 27) and will remain closed tomorrow, Wednesday and Thursday (June 28-30).

University Images will be closed for inventory Wednesday and Thursday (June 29-30).

Both stores will resume normal summer hours Friday (July 1).

We will be open online while our stores are closed and we'll process orders as soon as we're back open!
