Business Huskies Earn First in International Portfolio Competition

Students in Michigan Tech’s College of Business have won first place in the Quinnipiac University Global Asset Management Education (GAME) Forum XI portfolio competition's Undergraduate Value Portfolio division.

The students — Carissa Beyer, Kyle Clow, Ben Diercks, Brette Eychner, Brandon Malburg, Tyler Sepanik and Irene Trierwieler — are members of the Applied Portfolio Management Program (APMP) and competed virtually representing Team Gold.

MiCUP Poster Presentation on Thursday

Join the Center for Diversity and Inclusion from 2-4 p.m. on Thursday (June 23) in the MUB Ballroom for the MiCUP Program's Research Poster Presentation.

Students from Delta College, Grand Rapids Community College and Wayne County Community College who have been participating in research labs with Michigan Tech professors will present their research findings. Please join us in a celebration of their accomplishments.

This event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served throughout the event.

Mileage Rate Increase

The Internal Revenue Service has announced an increase in the standard mileage rate for the final six months of 2022.

As of July 1, the standard mileage rate for business travel will be 62.5 cents per mile, up 4 cents from the current rate. The new rate for moving expenses will be 22 cents per mile, which is also an increase of 4 cents from the current rate.

Come Ziplining with GSG and OAP

The Graduate Student Government's (GSG’s) Social Committee will have a ziplining event in collaboration with Michigan Tech's Outdoor Adventure Program (OAP) today (June 21) from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Join us on the Michigan Tech Challenge Course at the Tech Trails for some outdoor fun. Come enjoy nature and warm weather in the Upper Peninsula summer with us! Training and equipment will be provided by OAP.

Fall 2022 PHF Graduate Assistantship Nominations Open

Applications for fall 2022 Portage Health Foundation (PHF) Graduate Assistantships are being accepted and are due no later than 4 p.m. next Tuesday (June 28) to the Graduate School. Instructions on the application and evaluation process are found online. Students are eligible if all of the following criteria are met:

  1. Must be a Ph.D. student conducting a research or outreach project that will promote and/or improve the overall health of Houghton, Keweenaw, Baraga and Ontonagon communities.
  2. Must be a Ph.D. candidate at the time of application.
  3. Must be two years after starting the graduate program at the time of application.
  4. Must not be a prior recipient of a PHF Graduate Assistantship.
  5. Preference will be given to applicants with longstanding local connections to Houghton, Keweenaw, Baraga or Ontonagon county.

Priority will be given to students originally from Houghton, Keweenaw, Baraga or Ontonagon counties. Nonresident students and international students are encouraged to apply if their health research is applicable to health needs and job shortages of our local community (obesity research, rural health, medical informatics, drug delivery and lab testing, physical therapy, etc.).

These assistantships are available through the generosity of the Portage Health Foundation. They are intended to recognize outstanding Ph.D. talent in health-oriented research areas. Applicants should be a catalyst for promoting and improving the overall health of Houghton, Keweenaw, Baraga, and Ontonagon communities through one of the following:

  • Health research and technology development
  • Health education or preventive and wellness initiatives
  • Rural healthcare access, informatics and assessment of care

Students who receive full support through a PHF Graduate Assistantship may not accept any other employment. For example, students cannot be fully supported by a PHF Graduate Assistantship and accept support as a GTA or GRA.

Keweenaw Tourism Conference: Sustaining the Keweenaw

Stakeholders and business owners of the Keweenaw are invited to join us for a Keweenaw Tourism Conference on Friday (June 24) in Michigan Tech’s Memorial Union Building Ballrooms A and B. The conference will take place from 2:30-8 p.m., and will consist of a series of presentations, panels and discussions on tourism and sustainability practices in the Keweenaw.

Students who participated in the Amtrak Tourism sustainability summer program have synthesized both their experiences throughout the United States and interdisciplinary approaches to accessibility and transportation, culture and place, and environmental factors.

We would appreciate anyone who is interested in coming to the conference to RSVP using the contact information listed below. The last day to RSVP is today (June 21).

Conference Summary:

  • 2:30-5 p.m. — We will be holding interactive, informational panels and providing light snacks and refreshments throughout.
  • 6-8 p.m. — We will be holding a banquet and dinner. This section is intended for students, friends, family and interested attendees.

Proud Innovation Series

There’s still time to celebrate entrepreneurship and Pride Month with the United States Patent and Trademark Office’s (USPTO) Proud Innovation virtual presentation series. The last discussion in the series, “From enthusiasm to entrepreneurship," will be broadcast tomorrow (June 22) from 3-4:15 p.m. in the Van Pelt and Opie Library’s East Reading Room. Panel members will talk about what it takes to turn individual passions into entrepreneurial successes.

This event is being jointly hosted by Michigan Tech’s Patent and Trademark Resource Center and the Center for Diversity and Inclusion. All are welcome and refreshments will be served. Please register so we don't order too much, or worse, too little pizza!

Alumni Reunion 2022 (Aug. 4-6) is quickly approaching, and the Alumni Engagement team is looking forward to hosting a fun weekend full of activities for our alumni. The schedule of events can be viewed on the Reunion webpage, and registration is open online until July 24.

A highlight for our Reunion guests each year is visiting their academic departments and service areas. All departments are invited to host visitors during Reunion weekend's Campus Open Houses on Aug. 5 from 1-4 p.m.
