Women's Basketball Notches Third Win, First Defeat

The Michigan Tech women's basketball added one more to their win streak before their first defeat of the year.

Friday (Nov. 19), Ellie Mackay reached 1,000 career points and the Huskies made timely jump shots down the stretch to defeat the University of Minnesota Crookston 65-57 in nonconference play at the SDC Gym.

Mackey totaled 11 points to become the 27th player in Husky history to cross the 1,000 point mark, but it was teammate Katelyn Meister with 18 points who led the Huskies over the Eagles. Clara Johnson also had a strong performance with 10 points, including 3-of-4 shooting from the 3-point arc.

On Saturday (Nov. 20), No. 18 University of Minnesota Duluth ended Tech's three-game win streak — the Huskies fell 67-50 at the SDC Gym. Brooke Olson totaled 17 points, a majority of which came in the paint. The Bulldogs limited the Huskies to under 33% shooting on their home court.

"They're a phenomenal team that is well coached," head coach Sam Clayton said of the Bulldogs. "Their defensive urgency was really good and forced us to make tough shots all night."

Hockey Splits Series vs. Bemidji State

Michigan Tech's hockey team won its first match against Bemidji State, but the Beavers were victorious in the second.

The Huskies earned their second straight CCHA road win with a 4-3 victory at No. 20 Bemidji State on Friday (Nov. 19). Tristan Ashbrook had a pair of goals in the victory.

"I thought our guys played extremely hard and were resilient all night," Tech coach Joe Shawhan said. "These are huge league points for us against a ranked team and highly respected team."

On Saturday (Nov. 20), Michigan Tech lost to the Beavers 4-3 at the Sanford Center. The Huskies are now 6-5 overall and 3-3 in the CCHA.

"Bemidji earned the win tonight for sure," Shawhan said. "I thought we had really good performances from some players tonight, but they played a more competitive game than last night. It's not going to get any easier as the season continues, so we need to keep working at it."

Men's Basketball Holds Off Minnesota Crookston

Owen White posted 24 points to help Michigan Tech men's basketball to a win over Minnesota Crookston 83-72 Saturday (Nov. 20) at Lysaker Gymnasium.

The Huskies rallied for 53 points in the first half and kept the Eagles at bay in the second to move to 2-1 in nonconference play. Eric Carl also scored 20 points with four 3-pointers while Trent Bell stoked the defense with seven rebounds and four steals.

"Any road win is a good win," said head coach Josh Buettner. "We really executed well in the first half. Credit to Crookston with how hard they played in the second half. They seized the momentum. I was proud of our guys for making plays down the stretch to pull out the win."

Volleyball Wins Semifinal, Falls in Championship

The No. 20 Michigan Tech volleyball team won their semifinal match to advance to the final round of the GLIAC tournament, then lost a hard-fought championship match.

The Huskies advanced to the GLIAC championship with a 3-1 victory over Davenport Saturday (Nov. 20) at the SDC Gym. The Huskies won 16-25, 25-14, 25-21 and 27-25.

"It was a gutsy team win," Tech coach Matt Jennings said. "I'm very happy we advanced. Every win is a big one, especially in the playoffs. That's a team that's been playing good ball. They improved all year and were playing their best. We dug deep as a team and got it done."

On Sunday (Nov. 21), Ferris State defeated the Huskies 3-2 in the championship match at the SDC Gym. The Huskies won the first and third sets (25-21 and 25-15). The Bulldogs took the second (25-21), fourth (25-19) and fifth (16-14).

"This one stings because we fell short, but we are still alive," Jennings said. "We're going to play in the NCAA. It's just a matter of where. This team fought as hard as I've ever seen. If you were here today, you were witness to a dandy. It's unfortunate we didn't have our full team, but that's even more of a testament to the group we did have today. I couldn't be more proud."

Michigan Tech is 24-6 overall. The NCAA bracket was slated to be announced yesterday (Nov. 22) at 7:30 p.m. Read more at the Michigan Tech Athletics website.
