Accepting Proposals: SYP Visiting Instructor Program

Summer Youth Programs (SYP) is currently accepting proposals for our Visiting Instructor Program and we would greatly appreciate your help spreading the word!

The Visiting Instructor Program invites educators to propose their own SYP course for next summer. Educators will enjoy benefits including a salary of $725, up to $350 of reimbursement for travel expenses, on-campus lodging and meal plan, and a student from their school or organization will also receive a scholarship to attend an SYP course! Educators will also have the opportunity to enjoy the gorgeous Keweenaw Peninsula during their evenings.

This year's theme for courses is "Rising to Meet the Challenges of Tomorrow" and selected courses will educate students on a challenge or need we will encounter as a society in the next 10 years, the groundwork being laid today to address this challenge and areas for improvement or investigation, as well as careers related to the potential solution.

Additional information about the program can be found at the Summer Youth Programs website. Proposals are due Nov. 1.

ADVANCE Weekly Roundup: Biases in Student Teaching Evaluations

Research into Student Teaching Evaluations often focus on what such evaluations actually measure and the inherent biases about instructors that can disadvantage or advantage particular faculty.

This week's article in Inside Higher Ed reports on a metastudy that addresses both measurement and equity biases in student evaluations and suggests strategic responses for higher education institutions. One issue of concern is the relative lack of research attention to issues of racial and intersectional identity bias — most equity bias research is on gender. The metastudy found a “gender affinity” bias that may extend to race as well. One recommendation is that administrators should temper reliance on student evaluations with alternative and complementary assessments for evaluating teaching, such as teaching portfolios and reviews of pedagogical materials.

Today’s feature was shared with us by Cinzia Cervato, professor at Iowa State University and principal investigator (PI) of the ADVANCE Partnership Grant, which includes Michigan Tech. If you have an article you think we should feature, please email it to advance-mtu@mtu.edu and we will consider adding it to the ADVANCE Weekly Roundup.

The ADVANCE Weekly Roundup is brought to you by ADVANCE at Michigan Tech, an NSF-funded initiative dedicated to improving faculty career success, retention, diversity, equity and inclusion. Past articles are available on the ADVANCE Newsblog.

Michigan Tech strongly recommends that all employees and students receive the COVID-19 vaccine and continue with handwashing and hand-sanitizing practices, especially in light of the virulence of the COVID-19 delta variant. Please be aware that if you are exposed to COVID-19, quarantine guidelines vary depending on vaccination status.

National Disability Employment Awareness Month

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) and all members of the Michigan Tech community are encouraged to participate.

The purpose of NDEAM is to educate about disability employment issues and celebrate the many and varied contributions of America's workers with disabilities. This year's theme, "America’s Recovery: Powered by Inclusion," reflects the importance of ensuring that people with disabilities have full access to employment and community involvement during the national recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.

For specific ideas about how the Michigan Tech community can support NDEAM, visit the Office of Disability Employment Policy’s NDEAM web page. Suggestions range from simple, such as putting up a poster, to comprehensive, such as hosting a disability education program for your department. We all play an important part in fostering a more inclusive workforce, one where every person is recognized for their abilities — every day of every month.

Read more about NDEAM on the Diversity and Inclusion Newsblog.
