Participants Still Needed for Cycling and Memory Study

You’ve heard that people are bad at multitasking, but have you thought about how well you process and remember information while exercising? Or how a heavy cognitive load impacts your workout performance?

Researchers from the Department of Cognitive and Learning Sciences (CLS) are looking to explore these questions. The experiment will take 60-90 minutes to complete, with a total of 15 minutes of effortful cycling (three five-minute intervals with rest in between) and various memory tasks. Participants will be compensated for their time.

Please consider participating if you meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • Age 18-40
  • Currently perform at least 60 minutes of vigorous exercise per week
  • Fluent in English with no hearing impairments
  • Have experience cycling or spinning for exercise
  • Willing to wear a chest-strap heart rate monitor
  • Do not smoke, vape or use other forms of nicotine or recreational drugs
  • Have never suffered a heart attack or stroke
  • Do not have any cardiopulmonary disorders (e.g., high blood pressure)
  • Free from injuries and health conditions that would impair your ability to safely participate in strenuous aerobic exercise
  • Can refrain from vigorous exercise for 24 hours prior to participating
  • Can refrain from alcohol for 12 hours prior to participating
  • Can refrain from caffeine for three hours prior to participating

Please note: Because the study takes place in an indoor lab, you do have to wear a face covering while cycling.

For more information about the study or participation, contact Samantha Smith at slsmith1@mtu.edu.

New Route for Parade of Nations on Saturday

The annual Parade of Nations will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday (Sept. 18) and its route has changed again.

The parade will start at the Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce, across from the miner statue in Houghton. It will head down the hill to Lakeshore Drive, past Dee Stadium, and will follow Lakeshore Drive past Bridgeview Park, ending at Kestner Park. It will not go through downtown Houghton this year.

Nearly 30 countries will be represented by marchers with flags or floats. Bob Wenc, longtime member of the Parade of Nations organizing committee, will be parade marshal, and other notable individuals will walk in the parade, including:

  • Rick Koubek, President of Michigan Tech
  • Philip Johnson, Finlandia President
  • Wayne Gersie, Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion at Michigan Tech

Karen Colbert will sing the national anthem at Bridgeview Park, where Scavenger Hunt winners will be announced, and they will be invited to walk in the parade. At Kestner Park, there will be many photo opportunities with the flags of many nations.

The annual festival, sponsored by Michigan Tech and Finlandia University, celebrates the multicultural heritage of the Keweenaw.

For more information, see the Parade of Nations web page, email paradeofnations@mtu.edu or call 906-487-2160.

Chemistry Seminar Series

Physics Colloquium

Raymond Shaw (Physics) and Will Cantrell (Physics/GS) will give a talk at this week's Physics Colloquium.

Their talk is titled "Accessing New Physics by Super-Sizing a Convection-Cloud Chamber."

Please join the presentation today (Sept. 16) at 4 p.m. in Fisher Hall, Room 139.

From the abstract:
The Michigan Tech Pi Chamber generates clouds through turbulent thermal convection in a humid environment. The resulting lab-scale cloud allows exploration of the chain of events from aerosols to nucleated cloud droplets, to droplet growth by vapor condensation. An analogous chain of events can be studied for ice in supercooled water clouds. By scaling up the size of a convection-cloud chamber, we expect that one more crucial link can be added to the chain: the growth of precipitation-sized drops through collision and coalescence of cloud droplets. Michigan Tech is leading a collaboration to design the super-sized "aerosol-cloud-drizzle convection chamber" (ACDC2), that will allow the full range of "particle physics" in atmospheric clouds to be explored.

Reminders

Face Coverings Required Indoors on Campus

While Michigan Tech is at Health and Safety Level Two, face coverings must be worn indoors. This applies to all students, employees, and visitors, regardless of vaccination status.

Michigan Tech strongly recommends that all employees and students receive the COVID-19 vaccine and continue with handwashing and hand-sanitizing practices, especially in light of the virulence of the COVID-19 delta variant. Please be aware that if you are exposed to COVID-19, quarantine guidelines vary depending on vaccination status.

In Level Two, students and employees are not required to monitor their symptoms daily prior to coming to campus. But, individuals should be mindful of their own symptoms. A useful monitoring tool is available from the CDC.

Biological Sciences Seminar

Hoda Hatoum (BioMed) will present today (Sept. 16) at 3 p.m. as part of the Biological Sciences Seminar Series.

The presentation will be held virtually on Zoom

From the abstract:
Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) is a non-invasive valve replacement therapy that has been recently FDA approved for low-risk patients. Despite the importance of this therapy, TAVR has been associated with several adverse effects and long-term adverse outcomes such as short durability and thrombus formation. Several clinical studies showed that the incidence of leaflet thrombosis (LT) post-TAVR ranges between 8 to 24% overall, with increasing incidences from 30 day to 1-year timepoints, which makes leaflet thrombosis a highly important concern. ... The purpose of this study is to present a semi-empirical, mathematical model that links patient-specific anatomic, valve, and flow parameters to predict leaflet thrombosis. This tool will be essential in clinical pre-procedural planning. To this end, we used a combination of experimental, analytical, and computational fluid dynamic studies along with patient-specific data.
