Forbes has released a list of the top 25 colleges and universities in the nation for STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), and Michigan Tech made the list.

A STEM college is defined as one where more than 50 percent of the majors are in STEM fields.

Ranked number 25 in Forbes' Top 25 STEM Colleges, Tech joins a prestigious list that includes MIT, CalTech, Johns Hopkins, Georgia Tech and Rensselaer Polytech.

"It is exciting to see the increasing recognition of the high quality and accessibility of a Michigan Tech education," said Michigan Tech President Glenn Mroz. "The top 25 include both public and private schools, and there are only five public universities on the list -- including Michigan Tech -- that are not military or merchant marine academies."

The article noted that the top 25 STEM colleges lack the gender and ethnic diversity of other schools, although numbers of women in STEM fields are increasing. Female enrollment at Michigan Tech is 27 percent.

Forbes also noted that Tech is one of three colleges on the list that are more accessible to potential students than some of the better-known STEM powerhouses, admitting 66 percent or more of applicants.

Michigan Technological University is a public research university founded in 1885 in Houghton, Michigan, and is home to more than 7,000 students from 55 countries around the world. Consistently ranked among the best universities in the country for return on investment, Michigan’s flagship technological university offers more than 120 undergraduate and graduate degree programs in science and technology, engineering, computing, forestry, business and economics, health professions, humanities, mathematics, social sciences, and the arts. The rural campus is situated just miles from Lake Superior in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, offering year-round opportunities for outdoor adventure.
