Borrowing from this Library

Patrons may borrow materials both from our library and from other libraries with which we share interlibrary borrowing privileges. Faculty, students, and staff are eligible for the Michigan Tech HuskyCard. Community members and other patrons are eligible for our Courtesy Borrowing Card.

HuskyCard

Michigan Tech faculty, staff, and students may use their HuskyCard to borrow materials from the library, including books, maps, government publications and media. Other materials such as laptops, reference books, most print course reserves, microforms and special collections may be borrowed for on-site use.

Courtesy Borrowing Card

Eligible community members may request a Courtesy Borrowing Card by providing current identification and a home address. To be eligible for a Courtesy Borrowing Card, an individual must be 18 or older, and either a summer resident or permanent resident of Houghton, Keweenaw, Baraga or Ontonagon County. Family of faculty, staff, students, and alumni are also eligible. MeLCat interlibrary loan service is included; Illiad Interlibrary loan service and Document Delivery service are not. Visit the Library and IT Service Center for details.

Fees and Fines for Overdue Materials

The warning system and penalties for overdue materials

  1. Borrowed items kept beyond their due date are overdue. The library will send regular overdue notices to the patron via email or text. Please see the library’s Borrowing Rules and Fees chart for details.
  2. Loss of borrowing privileges will occur if either:
    • 3 items are overdue.
    • A recalled item is overdue.
  3. If an item is recalled by a patron, fines of $1/day will accrue starting on the due date in the recall notice.
  4. Library patrons will receive e-mail warning notices 5 days prior to the due date. At that time patrons may:
    1. Renew the item.
      • Request a renewal by sending an email to servicedesk@mtu.edu.
      • Renew the items online by logging in to their library account.
      • Borrower is allowed 3 renewals per item. Afterwards, the item must be brought to the library. If there is not a recall on the item, it may be charged out to the patron again.
    2. Return the item by the due date.
  5. Library patrons will receive 3 warning notices. If the item is not returned within 3 weeks of the due date, the patron will be billed for the item plus a $10 processing charge.
