There are several banks in the area that assist students with finances. Features to consider when choosing your bank are location, account types—you may want an International Remittance Account—and ATM availability on campus.
Health and Insurance
Health insurance coverage is required throughout your stay at Michigan Tech. If you don't already have insurance, we can provide you with information. Your well-being is also important. Learn more about your health care and insurance options.
Before accepting any kind of job, contact IPS to find out if your visa allows you to work, and about other forms and requirements. We have all the details on employment options:
- On-Campus Employment
F-1 students may work on campus up to 20 hours per week, including assistantships, during fall or spring semester and full time, up to 40 hours per week, during Thanksgiving break, winter break, spring break, and summer.
- Curricular Practical Training (CPT)
CPT authorizes employment for a credit-bearing off-campus job directly related to a specific course. Cooperative programs, or co-ops, are arranged through collaboration with Michigan Tech Career Services.
- Optional Practical Training (OPT)
OPT is authorization for a temporary job completed after graduation, to provide practical experience in a student's career field.
