Daniell Heights Living Guide
Services and Amenities
Bus Service
Bus service to campus is provided free to residents during the regular academic year. During the summer, residents pay a nominal fee.
The bus picks up riders in Daniell Heights continuously from 7:35AM to 9:50AM at 15, 35, and 50 minutes after the hour, Monday through Friday. Starting at 10:00AM until 4:00PM, rides from the MUB to Daniell Heights will begin near the top of each hour with a return to the MUB at approximately fifteen minutes after each hour. The last return trip leaving the MUB for Daniell Heights will be at 5:05PM.
The bus only stops at designated locations (look for BUS STOP signs). A demand service bus is also available by contacting the City of Houghton at 482-6092. The campus bus stop locations include the Memorial Union Building (MUB) and the Student Development Complex (SDC). The bus will not stop if it is at capacity (twenty-five people). Typically, the most crowded bus is at ten minutes before each hour.
Supplies
Several supplies are available at the Housing and Residential Life Office at no cost to residents: shower curtains and hooks, picture hooks, light bulbs, and ice-melting salt. Vacuums may be checked out for a day at no cost from the McNair and Wadsworth Hall reception desks.
Laundry
You and your neighbors may develop a schedule so that everyone in your building has an equal chance to wash and dry their clothes. If a system is already in place when you move in, you can either choose to fit yourself into it or propose changes. Do not wash clothes after 10:00PM or before 8:00AM on any day. Laundry etiquette dictates that no one should touch anyone else’s laundry during their time on the schedule or while the machine is in use. If clothes are left in the dryer, carefully set them on top of the dryer.
Since the laundry facilities are used by several families and individuals, it is a good idea to disinfect your first load. No one should ever use clothing dye or put dirty diapers in any washer. Remember to clean out the lint trap every time the dryer is used.
Do not overfill the washer or dryer. Clean the room regularly, and do not hang clothes to dry there. Leave the doors closed to keep pests out and prevent the water pipes and washing machines from freezing in cold weather. Store detergent and other laundry supplies in the laundry room at your own risk. If you see someone not from your building using the laundry, please report this to the community assistant.
Community and Activities Center
The Daniell Heights Community Center is located at the top of the S-curve at the beginning of the 2000 block. It is available for use by residents and their guests. It includes a community room that may be reserved on a first-come, first-serve basis. Monthly Apartments Residents Council (ARC) meetings, along with other Daniell Heights programs and events, are held in the community room. During the academic year, the community room also serves as a preschool.
The activities room, which adjoins the community room, may be accessed twenty-four hours per day, seven days per week using your Michigan Tech ID card. It includes a TV and DVD player. Please contact Housing and Residential Life to reserve the Community and Activities Center. You may reserve the room by completing the request form online.
Snow Removal
You are responsible for removing snow from the sidewalks leading to your building. If these areas are not kept clear, your mail and maintenance service may be delayed or discontinued. Periodically each winter, the University will require all vehicles to be moved so that built-up snow can be removed. Your vehicle will be ticketed and towed if it is not moved for snow removal. If you are going to be gone during the winter and you plan to leave your vehicle, you will need to arrange for a friend to move your vehicle for you.
Physical Fitness
The Student Development Complex (SDC) is in the “backyard” of Daniell Heights. The SDC is a great place for indoor recreation year-round. Information about the SDC may be found at www.sportsrec.mtu.edu.
The Quad Core Fitness Center (QCFC) also offers memberships to Daniell Heights residents. For more information, please visit the QCFC website.
Recreation
There are several recreational areas in both the Upper and Lower Heights. The Lower Heights has playgrounds located on the uphill side of the road between the 1800 and 1900 blocks and down the hill between 1906 and 1908. There are also a number of picnic tables throughout the area and a garden down the hill from the marquee sign. The Upper Heights has a playground area between 2012 and 2102. There is also a sand volleyball court between buildings 2105 and 2107, a community garden behind building 2012, and a basketball court between 2108 and 2110.
Recycling
Bins for recycling are located in buildings 1805, 1906, 2009, and 2106. Visit www.esc.mtu.edu for more information about recycling at Michigan Tech.
