Moving Out

Moving Out

Your move out date is on your contract that you signed. Most contracts will terminate on May 10 of each year. Contracts must be renewed each year. If you do not renew your contract, you will be expected to move out at the end of the Spring semester on May 10. Please check your contract for the last date of your contract.

Prior to moving out, you will receive a letter from Housing and Residential Life with move out instructions. The instructions will include reminders for areas that you need to clean. The letter will include instructions for returning your keys. Please make sure to take all of your belongings out of storage before you move.

If you want to move out before your contract expires, you will need to complete a contract release form. You must come to Housing and Residential Life, 153 Wadsworth Hall, to pick up a contract release form. If approved, you will be released from your contract. There is a $300 fee for terminating the housing contract before the housing contract expires.

Subletting

Subletting is not permitted.

Half Rent Summer Program

If you will not be living in your apartment during the Summer, but you want to keep your apartment for the Fall, you may request to go on the half rent summer program. This is available to residents who will not be living in the apartment for a minimum of 60 days. You may leave your belongings in the apartment. You may keep your key. Facilities will put a lock on the door to prevent access until you return. Please contact Housing and Residential Life for specific details.

Returning Keys

When you move out, you will return your key to Housing and Residential Life. You will receive specific instructions in your move out letter. You may drop off keys during normal business hours to the Housing and Residential Life Office. After business hours, you may turn in your keys to the drop box by the apartment office.

Cleaning, Damages, Apartment Inspections, and Charges

When you are preparing to move out, you should thoroughly clean your apartment. When you move from your apartment, it will be inspected by an apartment inspector. At that time, each item in the apartment will be evaluated for its cleanliness and condition.

You will be expected to clean the apartment and remove all your belongings.

Regular Inspections

A regular inspection takes place after you have moved and returned your keys. This can be scheduled within two or three days of your leaving. You do not need to be present during the inspection.

Move Out Conditions and Special Arrangements

When you move from one apartment to another, you are making a “transfer.” Before you transfer you must return the apartment to it’s original state. An inspection must be done one week prior to the transfer date. You then have three days to complete the transfer and return your old apartment’s keys to the office. Contact Housing and Residential Life to set up the inspection.

If you transfer to another apartment for any reason, you will be assessed a transfer fee of $75.
