Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
I am not a Michigan Tech student. Can I purchase tickets? Why should I?
You absolutely may purchase tickets! Prizes can be directed towards a Michigan Tech student you designate after winning. You may decide to keep a prize if you wish, however, the grand prize of a scholarship for one semester of tuition will instead be awarded by check with federal taxes withheld.
Can I win more than one prize?
The drawing of winners is done without replacement, so you can win more than one prize if you purchase more than one ticket. You would have to be VERY lucky!
Will I have to pay taxes if I win a prize?
Under certain circumstances, the grand prize of a scholarship for one semester of tuition may require withholding for federal tax. If 100% of the scholarship is used to pay for tuition, the prize is tax-free. Otherwise, the IRS requires us to withhold 25% from the award for tax purposes. The Honors Institute will work with you and Financial Aid to maximize the benefit of the awarded scholarship. Money need not be withheld from all other prizes.
Are my ticket purchases tax-deductible?
No, but tax-deductible donations can be made by emailing email@example.com with “Raffle Donation” as the subject. We will send you the information needed to submit a tax-deductible donation.
When is the scholarship applied? May I defer it to another semester?
The scholarship will be applied immediately for the Fall 2014 semester. Due to tax reporting and raffle accountability, the scholarship may not be deferred to a later semester.
I purchased a ticket online. Where is my physical ticket? How do I know which ticket number is mine?
It is costly to send every ticket purchased online in the mail. This detracts from the benefit to undergraduate research. Instead, a receipt, including the ticket number, will be emailed to the email address you provided. Please allow one business week for processing.
I am skeptical of student groups. How can I inquire into how the raffle is run appropriately?
Inquiries are more than welcome! We have excellent leadership and well documented processes. Please email firstname.lastname@example.org with “Raffle Inquiry” as the subject. We would love to answer your questions by providing appropriate documentation.
I purchased a ticket and wish to return it for a refund. What do I do?
Tickets may be returned within 10 days of purchase or up to September 3, whichever is sooner. Please email email@example.com with “Ticket Refund” as the subject. We will issue valid refunds as soon as possible; longer waiting period if ticket is purchased in person.
