Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

I am not a Michigan Tech student. Can I purchase tickets?

You absolutely may purchase tickets! Prizes can be directed towards a Michigan Tech student you designate after winning. You may decide to keep a prize if you wish, however, the grand prize of a scholarship for one semester of tuition will instead be awarded by check with federal taxes withheld.

Can I win more than one prize?

The drawing of winners is done without replacement, so you can win more than one prize if you purchase more than one ticket. You would have to be VERY lucky!

How will I know if I won a prize if I don't attend the drawing?

All winners will be emailed at the email address they provide on the day of the drawing, and will be called at the phone number they provide by the next business day following the drawing.

Will I have to pay taxes if I win a prize?

Under certain circumstances, the grand prize of a scholarship for one semester of tuition may require withholding for federal tax. If 100% of the scholarship is used to pay for tuition, the prize is tax-free. Otherwise, the IRS requires us to withhold 25% from the award for tax purposes. The Honors Institute will work with you and Financial Aid to maximize the benefit of the awarded scholarship. Money need not be withheld from all other prizes.

Are my ticket purchases tax-deductible?

No, but tax-deductible donations can be made by emailing honors+raffle@mtu.edu with “Raffle Donation” as the subject. We will send you the information needed to submit a tax-deductible donation.

When is the scholarship applied? May I defer it to another semester?

The scholarship will be applied immediately for the Fall 2013 semester. Due to tax reporting and raffle accountability, the scholarship may not be deferred to a later semester.

I purchased a ticket online. Where is my physical ticket? How do I know which ticket number is mine?

It is costly to send every ticket purchased online in the mail. This detracts from the benefit to undergraduate research. Instead, ticket numbers are emailed to the email address you provided. You may request we send you the physical tickets you purchased, but we humbly request you help us maximize the benefit to undergraduate research.

How do I return my ticket for a refund?

All ticket purchases are final and no refunds will be offered. This helps us maintain ticket accountability to ensure the raffle is conducted appropriately.

How can I inquire into how the raffle is run appropriately?

Inquiries are more than welcome! We have excellent leadership and well documented processes. Please email honors+raffle@mtu.edu with “Raffle Inquiry” as the subject. We would love to answer your questions by providing appropriate documentation.
