An incomplete is initiated by the student with the professor to complete missing work beyond the end of the semester, due to an extenuating circumstance. The student must be able to complete the work without re-enrolling in the course and currently have a passing grade in the course. More information on an incomplete is located under the Registrar’s Office webpage, Grading Information.
A withdrawal is completed when the student cannot complete the course work in their courses for academic, financial, employment, transfer, medical or other reasons. This will result in either an N (for courses the student is passing at the time of withdrawal) or F (for courses the student is not passing at the time of withdrawal) on a student’s transcript. Depending on the time of the withdrawal the student may receive a refund, please refer to the refund schedule for this information. Students wanting to withdrawal should complete the Student Withdrawal Form.

International students should consult with International Programs and Services (IPS) prior to leaving campus to ensure they understand the visa consequences of their withdrawal. International students are also required to provide their departure information to IPS prior to leaving. Please contact IPS at 906-487-2160 for further questions.

Students may remain on medical withdrawal until a medical care professional has deemed they are ready to return to a rigorous academic environment. Students returning from a medical withdrawal must have the recommendation from their medical care professional before returning. Students who have been away from Michigan Tech for at least two semesters must complete the Readmission Application prior to returning.

There may be other information important for a graduate student looking to withdrawal. Please be sure to review the information under the Graduate School webpage about Medical and University Withdrawals.

Yes, it is still possible to return. Six-weeks gives the Dean of Students Office sufficient time to receive, review, and follow up if necessary with your documentation from your medical care professional. Please be aware that if we do not receive documentation or cannot contact your medical care professional for any follow up questions, this may hinder your ability to return in a timely manner.
