Due Tuesday: GLRC/ICC Rapid Seedling Research Funding Applications

Applications for the Great Lakes Research Center/Institute of Computing and Cybersystems (GLRC/ICC) 2023 Spring Semester Rapid Research Seedling Funding Opportunity are due Tuesday (Nov. 1).

The intent of this funding is to provide faculty and research staff funds for idea development and data collection that will quickly enable large externally sponsored funding requests.

Proposals will be accepted from Michigan Tech tenured, tenure-track and research faculty, and research scientists and engineers. Any individual researcher is eligible to receive up to one award per calendar year as a principal investigator (PI).

Awards will be announced within one month of the funding cycle deadline. Projects should have a duration of one semester with request amounts not to exceed $10,000.

Awardees must be an affiliated member of the GLRC and/or ICC and are expected to assign a Center/Institute of the GLRC or ICC to any subsequent proposals and awards generated using the data developed/enabled with the rapid seedling funding.

The application form, additional information, and instructions can be found in the Member Resources section of the GLRC Institute webpage and on the ICC website. Questions will be addressed by emailing glrc-icc-admin-l@mtu.edu.

BioSci Seminar Series: 'Leading at the Edge During COVID-19'

Kelly Kamm and Steven Elmer (KIP) and Ph.D. students Isaac Wedig and Ashley Hawke will present at the next session of the Department of Biological Sciences (BioSci) Seminar Series, from 3-4 p.m. today (Oct. 27) in the Great Lakes Research Center, GLRC 202.

The seminar is titled "Leading at the Edge During COVID-19: Challenges, Opportunities, and Future Pandemic Preparedness."

From the abstract:
In this presentation, we describe how the Department of Kinesiology and Integrative Physiology at Michigan Technological University assembled a COVID-19 pandemic response team to help protect the health of the campus and rural community. Specifically, our team worked to (a) enhance public health messaging, (b) manage the university contact tracing program, (c) expand health science curricula, (d) promote and facilitate physical activity as a key mitigation strategy, and (e) provide professional development opportunities for students. We also consider strategies to prepare for subsequent COVID-19 surges and future health emergencies. Leveraging our broad-based training in health science and “leading at the edge” was a critical asset for the campus and community and may serve as a model for other kinesiology departments and rural colleges and universities.

Environmental Engineering Graduate Seminar

The next Environmental Engineering Graduate Seminar will take place at 3 p.m. Monday (Oct. 31) in the Great Lakes Research Center, GLRC 202.

Ph.D. candidate Benjamin Barrios and M.S. student Benjamin Mohrhardt of the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geospatial Engineering (CEGE), Michigan Technological University, will present "Photochemical Fate of Free Amino Acids in Sunlit Surface Waters."

CTL Instructional Award: Chris Middlebrook, Josue Reynoso

The Jackson Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) will recognize Chris Middlebrook (ECE) and Josue Reynoso (COB) as co-recipients of the 2022 CTL Instructional Award for Curriculum Development and Assessment on Nov. 8 at 3:45 p.m. Middlebrook and Reynoso were selected for the award after being nominated via the Deans’ Teaching Showcase during the spring 2022 semester.

Please plan to join us in recognizing their accomplishments by registering for the event.

Middlebrook’s award presentation: "Curriculum Development: Creation of a Printed Circuit Board Manufacturing Laboratory Course."

From the abstract:
Why Michigan Tech? Why go to school there? Why hire Michigan Tech engineering grads? What skills do they possess that are lacking in other engineering grads? A consistent answer to these questions is the hands-on laboratory experience students have throughout the engineering curriculum. The response is echoed with the hundreds of companies that continuously recruit Michigan Tech Engineering students. Laboratory experience increases student knowledge retention and fosters a deeper understanding through direct concept application. However, the creation of a new course with a laboratory component can often be a daunting task to faculty and staff given the amount of time and the number of resources that are often required. In this talk I will share my experience with the creation of a formal course and laboratory on Printed Circuit Manufacturing utilizing prior research equipment coupled with existing infrastructure and corporate participation and in-kind donations. The outcomes and ancillary activities associated with the course and lab, such as the building of the new Plexus Electronics Maker Space, will also be discussed.

Reynoso’s award presentation: To be announced.

Volleyball Begins Busy Week with Sweep of NMU

Michigan Tech volleyball led from start to finish in a dominant 3-0 sweep of rival Northern Michigan on Tuesday (Oct. 25) at the SDC Gym.

The Huskies won 25-15, 25-21 and 25-12 to hand the Wildcats their fourth GLIAC loss of the season and improve to 16-8 overall and 8-6 in the conference.

"It always a good day when we can play that well and beat a good team," Tech coach Matt Jennings said. "We felt like we played well Friday against Grand Valley, and Davenport may have exposed us in some areas. It was good to see that we were the aggressor today and made a quick turnaround and stepped up in all areas of the game."

Next, the Huskies are heading back downstate to face Wayne State tomorrow (Oct. 28) and Saginaw Valley State on Saturday (Oct. 29).
