Academy for Engineering Education Leadership Induction and Reception

Please join us as we learn from, celebrate and induct three outstanding educators into the Academy for Engineering Education Leadership this Friday (Oct. 28) at 2 p.m. in the East Reading Room of the Van Pelt and Opie Library.

Janet Callahan, dean of the College of Engineering, will host the induction ceremony, and refreshments will be served. Everyone is welcome — faculty, staff, students and the community.

After the induction, attendees are invited to stay for a learning/Q&A panel, “Leadership in the Engineering Academy,” starting at 3 p.m.

This year's academy inductees are:

  • Debra Larson — Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, California State University-Chico
Creating pathways for all students to succeed is a primary focus for Larson. She is a highly effective problem solver and resilient leader who respects shared governance and the diversity of experiences. She is passionate about innovating and delivering high-quality and hands-on education that prepares each generation of graduates for success and well-being. Larson earned her B.S. and M.S. in Civil Engineering from Michigan Tech, and her Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from Arizona State University.

  • William Predebon — Professor Emeritus, Department of Mechanical Engineering-Engineering Mechanics (ME-EM), Michigan Technological University
Encouraging faculty, staff and students to innovate, push boundaries, take risks and be entrepreneurial was a daily activity for Predebon during his 25 years of service as ME-EM department chair. Under his watch, the ME-EM department made tremendous strides in conducting interdisciplinary research, growing the doctoral program, expanding research funding and labs, and advancing the curriculum. Predebon earned his B.S. in Engineering Science at the University of Notre Dame, and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Engineering Mechanics from Iowa State University.

  • Sheryl Sorby — Professor of Engineering Education, University of Cincinnati
Serving as founding chair of the Department of Engineering Fundamentals at Michigan Tech, Sorby developed and delivered a highly supportive first-year program — a legacy effort that remains to this day. Her groundbreaking research and outreach, focused on helping people across age groups and cultures to develop their 3-D spatial skills, enables educators to develop the capacity of students worldwide. Sorby earned her B.S. in Civil Engineering, M.S. in Mechanical Engineering and Ph.D. in Engineering Mechanics at Michigan Tech.

The Academy for Engineering Education Leadership was established in 2018 by the College of Engineering. Two alumni, Sarah Rajala and Karl Smith, were inaugural inductees.

Soccer Falls at Ferris State, Comes Back to Win at SVSU

The Michigan Tech soccer team was shut out by Ferris State and rebounded for a comeback win against Saginaw Valley State over the weekend.

Tech's three game win-streak came to a close against Ferris State on Friday (Oct. 21). The Huskies fell 2-0 to the Bulldogs at the Bulldog Soccer Field in Big Rapids.

"Tough battle today from another very good Ferris team," head coach Bulut Ozturk said. "They capitalized on the one mistake we made early, I thought we recovered well and had opportunities to score and just could not find the back of the net today."

Ozturk said the second goal was a consequence of MTU "pushing numbers forward and looking for the equalizer."

On Sunday (Oct. 23), Tech spoiled Senior Day for Saginaw Valley State, scoring two unanswered goals in the second half to win 2-1 at Braddock Field in University Center.

"Hats off to Saginaw, they have a lot of good players," said Ozturk. "For us to group and have the urgency in the second half and battle back into the match when the easy option is to give up, it shows a lot of character and a lot of heart to refuse to go down without a fight and I'm super proud of them."

Hockey Takes Loss, Tie in CCHA Opener

Michigan Tech hockey emerged from their first CCHA series of the season against Bemidji State with a loss and a tie.

The Huskies fell 5-2 in their CCHA opener on Friday (Oct. 21) at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena, leading 2-0 before the Beavers responded with five straight. A third MTU goal was waved off because of goaltender interference.

"I thought we were pretty good in the first five minutes. Blake kept us in the game, but they brought it to a level that we may not be capable of getting to," Tech coach Joe Shawhan said. "The goal getting called off was a big turning point, but the reality of it is, throughout the game, we were hanging on."

On Saturday (Oct. 22), Michigan Tech and Bemidji State skated to a 2-2 tie to close the series. The Beavers earned the extra CCHA point with a win in the fifth round of the shootout after overtime.

"I'm proud of the effort and comeback," Shawhan said. "I thought the crowd was dynamic tonight and all weekend. We could feel their energy. It's not a win, but it's a point in the standings and it's something we can build off of."

Volleyball Defeats GVSU, Swept by Davenport

The Michigan Tech volleyball team jumped back into GLIAC play with a road trip downstate, coming home with a win against Grand Valley State and a loss to Davenport.

The Huskies kicked off the weekend with a 3-1 win versus the Lakers on Friday (Oct. 21). The Huskies won 25-18, 12-25, 25-19 and 25-15.

"This was a quality win for our team tonight," Tech coach Matt Jennings said. "We were really good on defense for the three sets we won, allowing us to slow down an otherwise very strong Grand Valley attack. Our blockers did a good job of getting touches at the net that gave our transition offense the opportunities we needed to keep up and sustain a lead. Our serving and passing game continues to be on point and came through again tonight in a big way."

On Saturday (Oct. 22), Tech fell 3-0 to the Panthers to wrap up their trip. The Huskies lost 25-18, 25-23 and 25-22 at the DU Student Center.

"Credit to Davenport for playing a nice match," Jennings said. "I thought we were just a step short today in our serve receive and defense, and we just made too many unforced errors at the wrong times. We'll regroup for a big match Tuesday."

Cross Country Teams Finish Fourth at Warrior Challenge

The Michigan Tech cross country teams ran at the Warrior Challenge at Willow Metropark in New Boston, Michigan, on Saturday (Oct. 22).

The women's team raced first, scoring 158 points en route to a fourth-place finish. The men followed with 107 points, also claiming fourth place.

"We rested part of our usual front end for this race, and we still beat out a lot of really good teams," head coach Kristina Owen said. "It was a great chance for our athletes to test out their race plans for the GLIAC Championships and get familiar with the course."

The women were led by Jesse Jacobusse (22:53.0, 16th), Elsa Huckles (23:17.50, 28th), Ingrid Seagren (23:24.50, 32nd), Jenna Brewer (23:49.60, 44th) and Theresa Passe (24:03.70, 49th).

The top finishers for the men were Tucker Ringhand (25:28.10, ninth), Kyle Samluk (25:43.80, 18th), Henry Snider (25:59.60, 23rd), Kenny Abraham (26:14.60, 29th) and Ben Holland (26:15.10, 30th).

Football Defeated by No. 7 Bulldogs, 28-20

Michigan Tech football led at halftime against the defending Division II national champions, but ultimately fell short to No. 7 Ferris State 28-20 on Saturday (Oct. 22) at Top Taggart Field.

It was the Huskies' second trip to Big Rapids in seven years.

"I was proud of our effort against another very good football team," said head coach Steve Olson. "Give credit to our opponent for fighting hard in the second half. We own our own mistakes, of course, but I felt they made good adjustments. It's going to be important for us to bring the same type of drive next week against another quality opponent."
