27th Annual LeaderShape Institute

One of the Student Affairs division values states, “We inspire the leadership needed for all individuals to boldly push everyday boundaries while serving others.” For over 25 years, Michigan Tech has hosted the LeaderShape Institute as a way to do just that.

LeaderShape Institute is a four-day retreat that helps students identify their values and gain confidence in their leadership skills through self-assessment, intensive small group discussions, team building challenges and more. By leading with passion, integrity and a healthy disregard for the impossible, participants explore who they are and the impact that they want to have on their communities. LeaderShape Institute 2023 will be held Jan. 4-7 at the Ford Center in Alberta, Michigan, just prior to the start of the spring 2023 semester.

Do you know a student who is involved across campus? How about one who isn’t, but has shown you their passion for a specific cause or concern? How about someone who is still figuring out the direction they hope to pursue in life? We know leaders have a wide variety of experiences and don’t need to hold a position or a title to impact their community. No matter who they are, how they are involved on campus, or what their future goals are — this program could benefit a student you’re connected with.

Are you already thinking of someone? Invite them to apply! Applications are available online now through Nov. 14.

Are you interested in being involved in this program? Contact Student Leadership and Involvement at activities@mtu.edu to learn how you could contribute to this meaningful experience.

WIBIT Wednesday at the SDC Pool

Today (Oct. 26) is WIBIT Wednesday at the SDC Pool!

MTU students and SDC Access Pass holders (minimum one-month), come make a splash with our new inflatable pool obstacle course called the WIBIT!

At WIBIT events being held this fall, you can test your individual skills on the course or challenge your friend to a race across the obstacles. The WIBIT has many different pieces and each event will have a featured combination. Potential featured pieces include:

  • The Step — This piece allows users to climb up onto the course.
  • The Base — Users must make their way across a horizontal surface. Be careful how fast you move, as it can get slippery!
  • The Cliff — Users must navigate either side of a slope using the handles and their balancing skills.
  • V-Connect — Users must use limited footing space to navigate across the horizontal structure.
  • The Bridge — Users must navigate up and over an arched structure without falling through.
  • The Slope — Users must climb up a six-foot wall that leads to a slide into the pool water below!

Featured Combinations:

  • Wednesday, Oct. 26 — Step/V-Connect/Cliff/Slope
  • Wednesday, Nov. 30 — Step/Bridge/Cliff/Slope

Times:

  • 5-7 p.m. — Current SDC Access Pass holders (minimum one-month)
  • 7:30-9:30 p.m. — Current MTU students

Come visit us at the pool to try out your skills!

Archives Travel Grant Presentation Tonight

Tonight (Oct. 26) at 6 p.m., Brian Forist will share his research on “The Works Progress Administration (WPA) in the Copper Country.” Please join us via Zoom for this free and open event!

The Keweenaw County Historical Society School at the Gay Museum has a set of floor looms built for and used by women employed by the WPA to weave rag rugs to sell in a craft shop along U.S. 41 near Ahmeek. Viewing these looms in 2021 inspired Forist’s research on Gay Industries and other New Deal-era programs employing women in the Keweenaw. He will be sharing what he learned during his visit to the Michigan Tech Archives in June 2022 and new directions for research.

Forist is a parks, recreation, and the outdoors faculty member at Indiana University and has worked as a national park ranger and environmental educator in natural and cultural history settings. His interest in the New Deal began when he worked in the Youth Conservation Corps in Hiawatha National Forest, living at a camp built by men in the Civilian Conservation Corps.

If you have any questions about the Archives' Travel Grant Program Speaker Series or our other programs and services, please contact University Archivist Lindsay Hiltunen at lehalkol@mtu.edu or copper@mtu.edu.

Be sure to follow the Michigan Tech Archives on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter!

CEGE Alumni Speaker Series: 'A Husky Heads South for Traffic Engineering'

The next presenter in the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geospatial Engineering (CEGE) Alumni Speaker Series is Alex Hainen, associate professor at the University of Alabama.

Hainen will present the virtual webinar "A Husky Heads South for Traffic Engineering" at noon Thursday (Oct. 27) via Zoom.

Since graduating from MTU in 2009, Hainen has been involved with traffic engineering and traffic signals with many departments of transportation across the country. He started his faculty work at the University of Alabama in 2014 and started his research by deploying the Federal Highway Administration’s ATSPM platform for the Alabama Department of Transportation.

Growing from the original 85 intersections to now nearly 500 intersections, Hainen is involved with collecting data and working with engineers to study new ways to optimize traffic signal operations. Through these endeavors, he has also been engaged with every traffic signal manufacturer and nearly every traffic detection manufacturer. The next phase of this work focuses on trajectory control and leveraging basic safety message (BSM) data in modern traffic signal controllers. This talk will highlight many of these projects.

All of this was started by Professors Emeriti Bill Sproule and Bernie Alkire, and Associate Professor Kris Mattila (CEGE) encouraging and guiding Hainen to pursue graduate work and research.

Hainen is extremely thankful to be able to share some of this work with MTU colleagues.
