SWE, Aerospace Enterprise Represent MTU at Women in Aviation Day

On Sept. 17, eight students from the Aerospace Enterprise and Society of Women Engineers represented Michigan Tech at the first annual Women in Aviation Day in Wausau, Wisconsin.

Participating students were:

From Aerospace: Heather Goetz, Seth Quayle and Nolan Pickett (mechanical engineering); and Zoe Knoper (cybersecurity).

From SWE: Sophie Stewart and Katherine Rauscher (mechanical engineering); Kathryn Krieger (environmental engineering); and Cailyn Koerber (engineering management).

This event was hosted by the Learn Build Fly organization, which does incredible volunteer work in engaging their community in aviation. As summarized by Wausau's WSAW-TV NewsChannel 7, “The event aimed to get more women involved in recreational and professional aviation. Children had the chance to participate in ‘Young Eagle Flights’ by going for airplane rides, while other aviation organizations gave information about their programs.”

Visitors to the event had the opportunity to see a 3D model of the newest Aerospace Enterprise satellite design and learn how these students were designing and building satellites to go into space, while the SWE team worked with visitors on an outreach activity, Paper Circuits.

Participants' comments included:

Nolan Pickett: “Our Enterprise was given the opportunity to not only celebrate the women in our program, but also promote STEM to the next generation of college students — and fly in a WWII era B-25!”

Kathryn Krieger: “I loved being able to see so many young girls getting excited about STEM. It was really inspiring to see the many ways kids are getting involved with aviation and other STEM disciplines from such a young age.”

Both SWE and the Aerospace Enterprise teams enjoyed volunteering at Women in Aviation, learning more about the history of aviation and meeting with folks interested in aviation careers. This was a unique outreach opportunity and they appreciated the support they received from Admissions and the College of Engineering.

Hockey Ranked No. 20 in USCHO Preseason Poll

The Michigan Tech hockey team is ranked No. 20 in the Preseason DCU/USCHO.com Top 20 poll, which was released Sept. 19.

The Huskies also received votes in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll.

Tech hosts a pair of exhibition games at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena to begin the season. The Huskies will face off with Lake Superior State on Saturday (Oct. 1) and Lakehead on Monday (Oct. 3).

Their first regular season game is Oct. 7 at Ferris State, and their first CCHA series is Oct. 21-22, when Bemidji State comes to Houghton.

Cross Country Shows Out at Roy Griak Invitational

The Michigan Tech men's and women's cross country teams showed out at the historic Roy Griak Invitational in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on Friday afternoon.

The No. 15 men's team made history by winning their first-ever Jo Rider men's Maroon Race. The women improved five spots from last year's results, placing fourth as a team — and besting two nationally ranked teams, No. 14 UMary and No. 27 Minnesota State.

"Our men and women are firing on all cylinders right now," head coach Kristina Owens said. "On both sides, the teams have gelled around a common vision of performance excellence, and you can see it in the way they race together to the common goal. We're very excited to take home the team win on the men's side, a first in program history at this storied meet!

"The athletic department also invested in expanded mental skills education through the Restoic app, and we've been integrating that into our weekly training. We're hearing from many athletes that it's making a crucial difference in their performance mindsets."

Soccer Goes Winless on Road Trip

The Michigan Tech women's soccer team played to a scoreless draw against Davenport on Friday (Sept. 23) and fell to No. 7 Grand Valley State on Sunday (Sept. 25) to close out their road trip.

The Huskies' game against the Panthers ended in a stalemate on Friday.

"Another hard match," head coach Bulut Ozturk said. "Our team maintained possession very well today and worked extremely hard to find the back of the net. We definitely had chances to score. We will continue to work together and look for solutions. Overall, I am happy with the team's performance and I thought a tie was a fair result."

On Sunday, Tech couldn't pull off the upset at Grand Valley State, falling 1-0 to the Lakers.

"We had a game plan that required everyone to defend as a team," Ozturk said. "I thought we did a great job today in how we defended. On the flip side, we had a few chances that we couldn't capitalize on. But we continue to look for solutions on the offensive end. We are going to go home, regroup and get ready for our rival match against NMU next week."

Volleyball Sweeps Pride, Upends Rangers

The Michigan Tech volleyball team came out of the weekend with a sweep of Purdue-Northwest on Friday (Sept. 23) and a hard-fought, five-set victory against Parkside on Saturday (Sept. 24).

The Huskies swept the Pride on Friday at the Fitness and Recreation Center, winning 25-15, 25-16 and 25-19.

"We came in energetic and poised and played a good match tonight," Tech coach Matt Jennings said. "I thought our passing was on point, which made a big difference in our side-out game."

On Saturday, MTU won the final three sets to earn a 3-2 win at Parkside. The Rangers won the first two 25-23 and 25-19 before the Huskies rallied 25-18, 25-17 and 15-6 at De Simone Arena.

"What an important win for this squad," Jennings said. "We needed that one, not just for the standings, but more importantly, to better understand what it means to fight back in tough circumstances and not give up, ever."

Football Falls to No. 19 Cardinals

Michigan Tech couldn't stop Saginaw Valley State's rushing game, giving up 413 total yards in a 35-13 loss at Kearly Stadium in nonconference football Saturday (Sept. 24).

The Huskies led 13-7 at halftime, but the Cardinals rushed for 145 yards and two touchdowns to pull away in the second half.

"In the second half, they did a nice job of moving the football and finishing off drives," said head coach Steve Olson. "They have a really good running back who can make some plays, but we have some younger guys that need to be better and make some better reads. When we did get them off schedule, their quarterback was able to get outside the pocket. We have to do a better job of keeping contain in those situations. The bottom line is, we made far too many mistakes in the game to win."
