Fall 2022 On-Campus Flu Shot Clinics

Michigan Tech, in collaboration with UP Health System – Portage, is excited to announce four on-campus flu shot clinics scheduled for this fall:

  • Tuesday, Oct. 4 — 4-6 p.m., Rozsa Lobby
  • Tuesday, Oct. 11 — 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Rozsa Lobby
  • Tuesday, Oct. 18 — 4-6 p.m., SDC (Hockey Arena)
  • Tuesday, Oct. 25 — 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Rozsa Lobby

A few things to remember for this year’s flu shot clinics:

  • There's no need to make an appointment — all flu shot clinics are walk-in friendly.
  • Be sure to have a valid copy of your insurance card (or a very clear picture of the front and back of the card) with you when you arrive.
  • Be sure to fill out the 2022 Influenza Vaccination Authorization Form before you arrive.
  • Flu shots are $40 for those who do not have insurance. Payable by cash, check or credit card.

Western UP Food Systems Collaborative Harvest Celebration

The Western U.P. Food Systems Collaborative invites everyone to join them Sunday (Oct. 2) for their first annual Harvest Celebration! All are welcome at this free event to celebrate and learn from farmers, gardeners and local food enthusiasts.

The celebration will include North Harvest CSA doing a fermentation demonstration, Apple Acres Farm giving a talk on the benefits of tinctures and Tapiola Homestead showing the key to beautifully braided bread. The Harvest Celebration will conclude with a farm tour at the wonderful Mother Farmer in Ewen. Light refreshments will be provided, and guests will have an opportunity to barter and trade items such as garden abundance, vegetables, seeds, honey, jam and more.

Michigan Tech is a partner of the Western U.P. Food Systems Collaborative, a grassroots coalition of food growers and procurers, public health and civic partners, scientists, educators, land and water stewards, students and all community members.

The event will take place from 1-4 p.m. at the Stannard Township Park Pavilion, 14190 U.S. Highway 45, Bruce Crossing, MI. It will be followed by the farm tour at 4 p.m. at Mother Farmer, 23771 Old M28, Ewen, MI.

This Week at the Rozsa

Samantha Ege* — Wednesday-Friday, Sept. 28-30
Presented by the Rozsa and Michigan Tech Music

The culturally unique and diverse music of women and Black Renaissance composers are the focus of Samantha Ege’s residency at the Rozsa. Arriving in Houghton from the U.K., Ege is an internationally recognized concert pianist, renowned public speaker and award-winning researcher. During her residency, this Wednesday through Friday (Sept. 28-30), Ege will perform, speak and lead a piano workshop for local pianists.

Ege is a leading interpreter and scholar of 20th century composer Florence Price, the first African American woman to have her symphony played by a major American orchestra. Her performance will include two of Price’s works.

Friday evening, the annual outdoor concert on Walker Lawn returns! The Superior Wind Symphony looks back at the Etude Magazine article from 100 years ago titled "The Jazz Problem," and plays as much music by the doubters and the enthusiasts as they can.

Memorial for Mahsa Amini: Support Women’s Rights in Iran

The Iranian Community at Michigan Tech is hosting a moment of silence, followed by a short gathering, to honor Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish woman who died in police custody after being arrested by police under Iran’s hijab laws. The remembrance will take place at noon today (Sept. 26) near the Husky Statue.

In the days following Amini's death, large protests targeting human rights have erupted across Iran.

The Iranian Community at Michigan Tech is encouraging the campus community to stand in solidarity for Amini and those killed in the protests.

Physics Colloquium: Nanostructure Design, Operando Imaging

Ankun Yang of Oakland University will be presenting at the next Physics Colloquium. Please join the in-person presentation at 4 p.m. Thursday (Sept. 29) in Fisher Hall 139.

Yang's presentation is titled "Nanostructure Design and Operando Imaging Toward Next-Generation Photonic and Energy Systems."

RTC Colloquium: Article Publishing, Co-Authoring as Grad Students

The Department of Humanities announces a Rhetoric, Theory, and Culture (RTC) Colloquium featuring the co-authorship of two advanced RTC students. The event will be held on Zoom from 12-1 p.m. next Monday (Oct. 3).

The colloquium is titled "Article Publishing and Co-authorship as Graduate Students: ‘A Technical Hair Piece’ in Technical Communication Quarterly."

Ph.D. graduate Modupe Yusuf ’22 and M.S. graduate Veena Namboodri Schioppa ’22 return to present their summer 2022 article, "A Technical Hair Piece: Metis, Social Justice and Technical Communication in Black Hair Care on YouTube," co-authored when they were RTC graduate students.

Their article argues for the rhetoric of Black hair care YouTubers as tactical technical and professional communication (TPC) toward social justice by analyzing the embodied presentations and the multimodal, international, and intercultural affordances of YouTube.

The presentation will summarize the main findings of the article, present their motivation and writing process, and discuss some takeaways from navigating the editorial process in graduate school. Following will be a general Q&A session about article publishing, co-authorship and the scholarship that informed their article.

New Funding

Patricia Leopold (CFRES/ESC) is the principal investigator (PI) on a project that has received a $407,780 other sponsored activities co-op/joint agreement from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, U.S. Forest Service, Northern Research Station.

The project is titled "Northern Forest Climate Hub Support."

Patricia Shannon (CFRES/ESC) is a co-PI on this potential 27-month project.

Ph.D. student Dane Kim (environmental and energy policy) was quoted by the Theatre Times in a Q&A with Mary John Frank, the creator-director-choreographer of six-minute interactive VR/360 underwater adventure “From Sea to Rising Sea.”

The adventure is an immersive, educational theater experience blending virtual reality, Broadway musicals and synchronized swimming with climate change and technology.

Reminders

LEED Green Accreditation and Training Program Returning to MTU

LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Training will be offered at Michigan Tech again this fall. 

The U.S. Green Building Council created the LEED Green Building design/certification system, which has certified over 15 billion square feet of the built environment globally. Over 200,000 sustainability leaders have received their LEED accreditation.

Training will take place in 10 hours over five weeks, starting Oct. 13.
MTU students and employees are eligible. The Thursday sessions will be held from 4-6 p.m. in Chem Sci 211.

The training will be offered for $90, which includes notes and a book with all needed study materials. Paying online constitutes program registration, so no other registration is required.

Husky Innovate Panel Discussion: 'New Venture Creation'

Join us from 4-5 p.m. Wednesday (Sept. 28) as Ed Kim shares his insights on commercializing innovations and lessons learned as an entrepreneur and investor.

This virtual event will be held via Zoom and is open to the public. Register to attend virtually by tomorrow (Sept. 27).

Kim is a serial tech entrepreneur who has founded, funded and led several startups, as well as having a variety of financial and engineering leadership assignments with Fortune 500 companies.

Currently, Kim manages a grant program for the state of Michigan that funds deep tech innovations of Michigan research institutions, and is a limited partner at AVG Deep Tech Venture Fund.

Now, more than ever, is the time to promote and celebrate peaceful conflict resolution practices. There are a number of faculty and staff at the University who are trained as mediators and/or facilitators to assist individuals with resolving interpersonal conflicts. Faculty, staff and students can request conflict assistance through the Conflict Resolution Network.

The Conflict Resolution Network provides a variety of conflict resolution options including:

Idea Pitch Competition – Registration Open

Students who have an innovative idea that could disrupt the status quo and "business as usual" are welcome to pitch their ideas at the Idea Pitch Competition from 5-7 p.m. next Tuesday (Oct. 4) in the Great Lakes Research Center (GLRC).

Graduate and undergraduate students from all disciplines are welcome to pitch their ideas. Each contestant will have two minutes to share their idea in an interactive community setting. Student contestants should register online by Sunday (Oct. 2).

Audience guests are encouraged to attend in person but may also attend remotely. If you wish to attend remotely, please register via Zoom.

Judges will vote to select top pitches and award cash prizes to the top contestants:

The Institute of Computing and Cybersystems (ICC) and the College of Computing invite the campus community to a Computing[MTU] Showcase research poster session Oct. 10 from 1-3 p.m. in MUB Ballroom A.

Faculty and student researchers in all Michigan Tech departments are invited to submit posters. Prizes will be awarded at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The deadline to submit posters is Friday (Sept. 30) at midnight.

Pfizer Career Opportunities Seminar

The Department of Chemistry and the American Chemical Society (ACS) Michigan Tech Student Chapter invite you to join them for a virtual outreach session on medicinal chemistry and process chemistry at 3 p.m. today (Sept. 26).

The session will feature discussion about synthetic chemistry careers at Pfizer, Pfizer internships and new colleagues’ experiences.

Included will be a scientific presentation and Q&A: "The discovery and development of an oral inhibitor of the SARS-CoV-2 main protease for the treatment of Covid-19."

Husky Bites Returns for Fall Tonight!

What are you doing for supper this fall semester on Monday nights at 6 p.m.? Join Dean Janet Callahan (CoE) and faculty special guests for Husky Bites, a family-friendly, 30-minute (or so) interactive Zoom webinar.

Tonight (Sept. 26), we’ll launch the season with “Railroads — Back to the Future" with Pasi Lautala '97 '07, director of Michigan Tech’s Rail Transportation Program and associate professor of civil, environmental and geospatial Engineering.

Lautala will be joined by Eric Peterson '70 '71, retired former assistant chief engineer of public projects at CSX Transportation. Peterson is one of Michigan Tech’s greatest supporters and advocates of railroad activities and education. The two will share the secrets behind the energy efficiency of rail, and guide us from past railroads to what they are today. They’ll also discuss how railroads are securing a future in the era of rapid technology development.
