Environmental Engineering Graduate Seminar

The next Environmental Engineering Graduate Seminar will take place at 3 p.m. Monday (Oct. 3) in the Great Lakes Research Center, GLRC 202.

Brian P. Chaplin, Department of Chemical Engineering, Institute of Environmental Science and Policy, University of Illinois-Chicago, will present "Electrochemical Reduction of Water Contaminants Utilizing Novel Porous Electrode Design."

Lan Zhang, Jun Dai Presenting ICC/CC Lecture

Faculty members Lan (Emily) Zhang (ECE) and Jun Dai (COB) will present a lecture on Friday (Sept. 30) from 3-4 p.m. in person in MEEM 403 and virtually via Zoom. (Please note the change of location from Rekhi 214.)

The lecture is part of the new faculty lecture series presented by the Institute of Computing and Cybersystems (ICC) and the College of Computing (CC).

Zhang's research interests span the fields of distributed machine learning, wireless communications and cybersecurity in various cyber-physical systems (CPS) and Internet of Things applications. Dai's research interests lie in applying new technologies such as blockchain, Industry 4.0 and data analytics in the auditing profession.

The Daily Mining Gazette covered a moment of silence and gathering held by Iranian students at Michigan Tech to honor Mahsa Amini on Monday (Sept. 26).

Amini, 22, died after being detained by Iran’s morality police for allegedly wearing her hijab improperly. Her death has sparked protests and calls for reform throughout Iran.

Ph.D. students Khatere Kashmari and Rasoul Bayani (both mechanical engineering-engineering mechanics) were quoted in the story.

The Duluth News Tribune and 16 other regional outlets mentioned Michigan Tech in a story on reactivating drained peat bogs’ ability to store vast amounts of carbon dioxide by restoring their original water depth and vegetation.

Undergraduate research assistant Max Wegner (applied ecology and environmental sciences) was pictured recording bog measurements in one of the story’s accompanying images.

MIT's Department of Materials Science and Engineering mentioned Michigan Tech in a story about the results of the ASM Materials Education Foundation’s 2022 Undergraduate Design Competition. 

According to the story, Michigan Tech students won first prize in the competition for a project on the material characterization, modeling and optimization of aluminum-cerium-magnesium alloys for extrusion.

POW/MIA 5K Bridge Run

Michigan Tech's TSgt. Robert E. LaMotte Squadron of the Arnold Air Society presents the annual 5K POW/MIA Bridge Run, which will be held Saturday (Oct. 1) at 11 a.m.

The run honors POW/MIA individuals and raises money for the Hubbell VFW. All proceeds support veterans in the area.

The registration fee for this event is $20. Participants can register in advance or in person the morning of the run. Electronic payments can be made via Venmo to our financial management officer, @LillyBolliger, or you may bring a check or cash the day of the event.

Check-in and registration will take place Saturday at the ROTC Building (next to the R. L. Smith Building, aka the MEEM) on Michigan Tech's campus starting at 9:30 a.m.

The first 50 registrants receive a free T-shirt. Pre-register now!

ROBOT101 Event: Creating a Comic Adaptation of R.U.R.

Nick Johnson and Chris Murray of the University of Dundee will present a talk about their comic adaptation of Karel Čapek’s 1920 science fiction play, "R.U.R.: Rossum's Universal Robots," which introduced the word robot to the English language.

The talk will take place at noon tomorrow (Sept. 29) in the Michigan Tech library.
