ADVANCE Weekly Roundup: Gender-Diverse Teams Produce More Novel, Impactful Scientific Work

Today’s ADVANCE article comes from the field of medical sciences, where women are increasingly more prevalent; simultaneously, the field is moving toward more team approaches to research. The study authors collected a set of 6.6 million medical research papers over the last 20 years to assess the impacts of gender diversity among research authors on the relative impact of the work being produced. The authors found that research teams that were more gender-diverse produced publications that were significantly more novel than same-gender teams.

Gender-diverse teams also produced significantly more highly cited papers than same-gender teams. These findings were broadly generalizable across all of the medical subfields included in the sample of 15,000 journals. Mixed-gender teams typically have characteristics that would predict higher impact, such as diversity of expertise and larger network sizes and ranges, yet even when these characteristics are held constant, the gender-diverse teams perform better than same-gender teams, suggesting that there are other causal factors at play. More work in this area is needed, but gender diversity in STEM work appears to have clear benefits not only for the practitioners of the STEM work being done, but also on the scientific work being produced.

Today’s feature was shared with us by the Advocates & Allies program’s Advocates Team. If you have an article you think we should feature, please email it to advance-mtu@mtu.edu and we will consider adding it to the ADVANCE Weekly Roundup.

The ADVANCE Weekly Roundup is brought to you by ADVANCE at Michigan Tech, an NSF-funded initiative dedicated to improving faculty career success, retention, diversity, equity and inclusion. Past articles are available on the ADVANCE Newsblog.

Physics, CTL Hosting UDL Workshop Today

The Department of Physics and the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) are co-sponsoring a workshop today (Sept. 23) at 10 a.m. in the East Reading Room in the J. Robert Van Pelt and John and Ruanne Opie Library.

Erin Scanlon is an assistant professor in residence at the University of Connecticut and a founding steering committee member of the American Physical Society’s Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity Alliance (APS-IDEA). Her guest workshop will focus on concrete ways to implement the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework in STEM classes.

Scanlon, a Michigan Tech graduate, holds a B.S. and M.S. in Physics and a Ph.D. in Developmental Education with an emphasis in developmental mathematics. In addition to teaching introductory physics courses, she researches ways to move the physics community toward being more diverse, equitable, inclusive and socially just, with particular emphasis on changing social structures to support disabled people.

Participants will be asked to do some prework (a short video and some teaching practice reflection). In-person attendance is encouraged for this interactive workshop, but attendance via Zoom is an option, and the session will be recorded. Don't miss this opportunity to learn practical tips from a UDL expert who knows Michigan Tech!
