Please plan to join us in recognizing their accomplishments. Register in advance to attend these events.

Kristin Brzeski
Brzeski’s award presentation is titled "Integrating regional natural resource partners into lab and field based learning."

From the abstract:
Dr. Kristin Brzeski will share her experiences developing and funding a field and wet-lab based component in her wildlife courses. In this presentation, Dr. Brzeski will emphasize how she integrates partnerships with the MI Department of Natural Resources (DNR) into her instruction, where students generate data that is presented directly to DNR biologists. Through this process, students get hands-on field and lab based training while actively participating in the process of translating research for applied management. Students also get tips and advice for advancing their careers with land-management organizations such as the DNR.

Melanie Kueber Watkins
Watkins’ award presentation is titled "Collaborative Classroom Cloud Computing."

Dr. Watkins will highlight her use of project-based learning to enhance student computing skills and job preparedness. Her approach involved integrating new concepts and skills into courses for 2D hydraulic modeling with lidar data, including Linux scripting.

Soccer Goes 1-1 for the Weekend

Michigan Tech women's soccer team defeated Purdue-Northwest inside Dowling Park on Friday (Sept. 9), then lost a hard-fought match to Wisconsin-Parkside in wet, windy conditions on Sunday (Sept. 11).

On Friday, Neve Badalow and Alyvia Sanom both netted their second goal of the season to lift the Huskies past Purdue-Northwest.

"Every match is important and every match is a grind entering the conference portion of the season," head coach Bulut Ozturk said. "Purdue-Northwest made us work for it today and kudos to them and their new coach."

On Sunday, a 3-0 deficit entering the second half was too much for the Black and Gold to overcome, and the Huskies fell 3-1 to Wisconsin-Parkside.

"Good job to coach Nikolic and Parkside on the win today. Anyone can beat anyone on any given day in the GLIAC," Ozturk said. "It was a tough loss again today, but definitely something we'll look to learn from. We don't have much time before our next match, so we have to put this one behind us and just focus on the next one."

Volleyball Drops Two at Home

No. 19 ranked Michigan Tech volleyball dropped their first conference match to Davenport in five sets Friday (Sept. 9), then fell 3-0 Saturday (Sept. 10) to Grand Valley State at the SDC Gym.

On Friday, the Huskies won the first two sets in their home/GLIAC opener, but lost the final three to the Panthers.

"It's incredibly disappointing," coach Matt Jennings said. "We had a good team almost beat, but we gave them life. Serve receive in the third set is what did us in tonight and in our other loss this season."

Saturday, the Huskies couldn't fight off the Lakers, losing 25-22, 25-13 and 26-24. MTU is now 6-3 overall and 0-2 in the GLIAC.

"I think it was a better effort than last night," Jennings said. "I saw some fight in the team that I was hoping to see that made the difference for parts of each set. Grand Valley is a really good team and they played well."

Football Toppled by Tommies

Michigan Tech football fell 32-6 to St. Thomas' balanced attack and steady defense in nonconference play Saturday (Sept. 10) at O'Shaughnessy Stadium.

The Tommies scored on the opening possession and capitalized on a blocked punt for a touchdown early in the game to squash Tech's bid for an upset over their Division I foe on the road.

"First of all, I want to tip my hat to St. Thomas for coming out and playing a fundamentally sound football game, and executed well," said head coach Steve Olson. "From the standpoint of what we need to do better, we'll go back and look at the film, but there were some plays that were jump ball situations that St. Thomas made plays on and we didn't. We also had a blocked punt that just can't happen. Then they had the fake field goal on us in the fourth quarter, so we'll move on from it and continue to work hard to improve."
