Officials to Commission Great Lakes’ First High-Frequency Radar

Hosted by Michigan Tech and the Great Lakes Observing System (GLOS) — the regional node of NOAA’s Integrated Ocean Observing System program — an event called Safety in the Straits will bring together elected officials, state agencies, community members, businesses and researchers to commission a high-frequency radar (HFR) system installed in the Straits of Mackinac.

Safety in the Straits will take place Aug. 12 at Bridge View Park in St. Ignace, Michigan, from 1 to 2 p.m., with time afterward for a demonstration and photos.

“We chose the Straits for its strategic importance,” said oceanographer Lorelle Meadows (CLS). “It’s imperative for us to have the best technology available for environmental monitoring, search and rescue, shipping and other important applications that rely on a more complete understanding of the currents in this complicated area.”

Michigan Tech’s Responsibilities to Students with Disabilities

August has arrived and the start of the fall semester is just around the corner. We would like to remind the campus community about our obligation and commitment to providing equal access to all educational programs, activities and services for students with disabilities, per Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Access can be provided in several ways: by providing aids and services necessary for effective communication, like CART (communication access realtime translation) services and assistive listening devices; by modifying policies, practices and procedures, such as testing accommodations and access to campus facilities for service animals; and by providing architectural access to buildings, including residential facilities.

Reasonable accommodations are considered on a case-by-case basis and must be designed to meet the specific needs of the individual. Student accommodations at Michigan Tech are provided through Student Disability Services. Employee accommodations are provided through the ADA Coordinator in Equal Opportunity Compliance.

Please visit the Education ADA Fact Sheet from the ADA National Network for more information.

Matt Taylor Hired as Assistant Director of Athletic Communications

Michigan Tech Athletics has hired Matt Taylor as the assistant director of athletic communications.

"I'm excited to add Matt to our communications team for Michigan Tech Athletics and Recreation," Assistant Athletic Director Calvin Larson said. "As a former Division II student-athlete, he understands the demands of our coaches and student-athletes and his skill set will help us tell the stories of the Huskies — especially in our endurance sports."

"Houghton is a special place, and I am excited to be able to tell the stories of Michigan Tech's student-athletes," Taylor said. "I'd like to express my gratitude to Athletic Director Suzanne Sanregret and Assistant Athletic Director Calvin Larson for this opportunity."

Michigan Tech will work with the city on the project in summer 2023. During the repaving of Sherman Boulevard’s five lanes, one lane will be paved with a concrete/rubber mix. The lane will be compared with the other four for durability as part of MTU's testing of the concrete mix.

Updates from International Programs and Services

As you may know, the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) temporary rule changes for F-1 nonimmigrant students. It is important to note that these rule changes only apply to nonimmigrant students who were actively enrolled at a U.S. school on March 9, 2020, and are otherwise complying with the terms of their nonimmigrant status. Therefore, students who began their studies after this date are subject to standard USCIS rules and regulations.

Graduate students must enroll in 9 credits, and 6 of these credits must be in traditional, on-campus courses. F-1 students can count 3 online credits toward their full-time enrollment requirements during fall and spring semesters.

Undergraduate students must enroll in 12 credits, and 9 of these credits must be in traditional on-campus courses. F-1 students can count 3 online credits toward their full-time enrollment requirements during fall and spring semesters.

International students must enroll in the proper CO-OP course during their CPT semester to meet the full-time enrollment requirement from USCIS. IPS staff highly recommend that students do not take additional online courses during CPT. Students should consult with the IPS staff before making this decision. All guidelines for maintaining immigration status while studying at Michigan Tech can be found on the IPS website. Please encourage students to visit this page for more information.

The IPS staff are dedicated to helping international students and scholars understand and comply with government requirements during their time at Michigan Tech and beyond. If you have questions or concerns about working with international students, contact IPS staff at ips@mtu.edu or by calling 906-487-2160.
